2017 BMW 2-Series Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 BMW 2-Series was new.

Interior: 7.8

The 2017 BMW 2 Series boasts an interior that uses high-grade materials and a simple BMW-familiar design that has little frills. In coupe form, noise insulation is excellent. Up front, the seats are very comfortable and have a feeling of connectedness with the road. The back "seats" are tight, only fit for children, a bag, or your jacket – not necessarily in that order. Although the 2 Series doesn't come with a ton of features, its standard iDrive infotainment system is user-friendly. However, getting accustomed to its menu structure will require some practice. In both coupe and convertible body styles, trunk space is larger than what you'll find in rivals.

  • "Inside, the passenger cabin features a stylish design and top-notch materials reminiscent of the slightly larger BMW 4 Series. … In terms of ambiance, the passenger cabin is attractive, functional and especially quiet in hardtop form, and it features good quality materials." -- Edmunds
  • "It's tight in the back seat, which is generally a kids-only arrangement." -- Autotrader
  • "The 2016 BMW 2 Series looks like a BMW inside, with the same simple-yet-elegant dash layout we expect from the German manufacturer." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

The BMW 2 Series seats four on standard leatherette upholstery. Power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. For installing car seats, there are two complete sets of lower and tether anchors on both rear seats. The LATCH connectors are generally easy to use, and forward-facing convertible and booster seats fit well. However, rear-facing seats can require sliding the front passenger seat all the way forward.

Rather than giving off the impression of a floaty luxury car, this BMW's seats are decidedly sporty. Although they are manually adjustable, front seats offer plenty of ways to find the most comfortable driving position.

As you might expect, rear seats are a tight fit, making them suitable as either a shelf or seating for small children. Other entrants in the class are roomier in the back, but you might consider a luxury midsize car if you want plenty of back-seat room.

  • "The 2 Series feels taut from the driver's seat, which is a welcome departure from BMW's current quest for luxury." -- Autotrader
  • Slip inside the 2017 BMW 2 Series and you'll find highly adjustable sport seats that provide good support in spirited driving and above-average comfort on extended jaunts. The rear seats are as cramped as you'd expect from a car this size, making them best suited to small children or as a place to stash a jacket, purse or backpack." -- Edmunds
  • The Audi A3 and Acura ILX have more rear legroom, but the 2 Series offers considerably more rear legroom and headroom than the CLA 250." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features include automatic climate control, BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, a seven-speaker audio system, a 6.5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, user-specific key fobs, adaptive cruise control, and emergency services notification with collision notification.

Available options include a proximity key, satellite radio, a built-in garage door opener, a moonroof, navigation, a wireless charger, a Wi-Fi hot spot, parking assist, wireless Apple CarPlay, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system. Optional safety features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and high beam assist.

Compared to previous iterations of the iDrive infotainment system, the one in the 2 Series is quite capable and remarkably easy to use. Responses to user inputs are quick, and the iDrive's knob controller works quite well. Some will find its menu structure a little complicated at first, but it should get easier to work with over time. The 2 Series also has some nifty available options, including parking assist, which will take control of the wheel and park the car for you, steering and braking included.

  • The BMW iDrive infotainment system that's used to call up various settings on the standard 6.5-inch display … responds quickly to inputs, though in our experience it takes a few more twirls of the control knob and a couple of extra clicks to accomplish common tasks than similar systems from competing manufacturers." -- Edmunds
  • "Still dread having to parallel park? The 2016 BMW 2 Series' optional Parking Assistant will do it for you. Just find an open spot and the system will automatically steer the 2 Series into it." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "All 2-Series models are fitted as standard with BMW's knob-based iDrive infotainment system, which has evolved over the years from a bewildering complex unit to surprisingly simple and user-friendly system." -- Left Lane News (2015)

In coupe form, the 2 Series offers 13.8 cubic feet of trunk space, which is quite impressive for the luxury small car class. Convertible models lose a little bit of room, down to 11.8 cubic feet with the top up and 9.9 cubic feet with it down, which is also above average for a convertible of this size. Rear seats fold down to accommodate lengthier objects, giving the coupe a maximum of about 53 cubic feet of cargo space, which is competitive even with some small SUVs.

  • "Trunk space is a 2 Series strength, measuring 13.8 cu ft. in the coupe -- generous for a compact car. The convertible offers about 9 cu ft., which BMW says is enough to accommodate a pair of golf bags." -- Autotrader
  • "Trunk capacity in the coupe is a respectable 13.8 cubic feet, and the rear seatbacks fold down to allow transport of longer items. In the convertible, trunk space drops to about 9 cubic feet." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "There's a crossover's worth of cargo space inside -- 53 cubic feet of it with the rear seats folded." -- Car and Driver (2015)
