Powertrain

The 2019 BMW i8 family gets a power upgrade to 374 horsepower. That’s up 12 horsepower from the current model. Power comes from an electric motor and a twin-turbocharged, 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine.

The engine makes 228 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is consistent with the current model. However, an upgraded 11.6-kWh battery pack (up from 7.1 in the outgoing i8) increases the electric motor’s power output to 141 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The new battery also increases the i8’s all-electric range to 18 miles.

Combined output now reaches 369 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, the Coupe can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and the Roadster pulls it off in 4.4. Top speed is electronically governed to 155 mph, and the i8 can drive up to 65 mph on electric power. Fuel economy estimates are 70 mpg-e with combined electric and gas power. That number will be significantly lower on gas power alone. The 2017 model gets a combined 28 mpg with its gas engine, which requires premium fuel.

All 2019 i8s feature five driving modes, including all-electric driving in comfort or eco pro and hybrid driving in comfort, sport, or eco pro.
