2018 Lexus GX
U.S. News Score: 7.2/10 | Average Price: $47,065 | Total Cost of Ownership: 7.5/10
When new, the 2018 Lexus GX landed near the bottom of our ranking for luxury midsize SUVs, but that didn’t make it a bad option. Even now, the GX offers incredible off-roading capability thanks to its tall body, 8.1 inches of ground clearance, crawl control system, a locking center differential, and a high-tech four-wheel-drive system. With a 301-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 engine, the GX rarely feels underpowered, and can tow up to 6,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Lexus packs the GX with all sorts of standard luxury features that include dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, an 8-inch touch screen, and a nine-speaker audio system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay weren’t available for 2018.
2019 Lexus UX Hybrid
U.S. News Score: 7.7/10 | Average Price: $36,750 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.1/10
2019 was the first year Lexus sold the all-new UX Hybrid. With its subcompact size, four-cylinder engine, and two-electric motor layout, the UX Hybrid stood out because of its excellent fuel economy estimates of 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. Those are impressive figures, especially when you consider the vehicle’s standard all-wheel-drive system.
The UX Hybrid comes with an extensive list of standard safety features thanks to the Lexus Safety System 2.0 suite. Adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, road sign recognition, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane trace assist are all standard. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) named the 2019 UX Hybrid a Top Safety Pick+, their highest accolade.
2019 Lexus UX
U.S. News Score: 7.7/10 | Average Price: $34,750 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.3/10
Lexus introduced the 2019 UX as an all-new luxury subcompact SUV, and it landed in the middle of our ranking. Despite its lackluster acceleration and frustrating infotainment controls, the UX stands out for its spacious cargo area, comfortable ride, and excellent predicted reliability score. Behind the rear seats, the UX offers 21.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is a good amount for the segment. The rear passenger area is tight, however.
The UX comes with a strong list of standard features that includes synthetic leather upholstery, keyless entry, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, a six-speaker audio system, smartphone compatibility, and Wi-Fi hot spot. If you’re looking to stand out with a sporty SUV, the available F Sport trim comes with a more aggressive design, larger alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and heavily-bolstered front seats.
2018 Lexus LS
U.S. News Score: 7.8/10 | Average Price: $54,902 | Total Cost of Ownership: 5.9/10
The 2018 Lexus LS has one of the lowest total cost of ownership scores on this list, but that mostly comes down to the class. Powerful engine choices and high depreciation drag down its total cost of ownership score. Beyond that hiccup, few vehicles can match the LS’ excellent predicted reliability score, high-end cabin, and extensive list of standard features.
On the inside, the LS has an upscale cabin with spacious accommodations for all. Soft-touch surfaces, luxurious materials, and a stunning design help the LS’ interior stand out. Additionally, the LS comes with leather upholstery, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a moonroof, dual-zone climate control, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display as standard. As the most luxurious sedan in Lexus’ lineup, the LS certainly pampers its passengers.
2015 Lexus LX
U.S. News Score: 7.8/10 | Average Price: $57,634 | Total Cost of Ownership: 7.3/10
When new, the 2015 Lexus LX placed near the top of our ranking for large luxury SUVs. While the LX lacks the same advanced driver-assistance features and interior panache as its rivals, it has an outstanding predicted reliability score and exceptional off-roading capability. Every LX comes with four-wheel drive, hill-start assist, crawl control, a multi-terrain select system, adaptive suspension, a limited-slip differential, and a 383-horsepower V8 engine.
Lexus offered the 2015 LX in a single well-equipped trim. While the LX doesn’t have an especially handsome interior design, the cabin features high-end materials and among the best fit-and-finish in the class. The LX also comes with a long list of standard features that includes leather upholstery, mahogany wood trim, a moonroof, and an 8-inch infotainment display.
2015 Lexus RC
U.S. News Score: 7.9/10 | Average Price: $37,589 | Total Cost of Ownership: 7.8/10
With an aggressive design, a lineup of powerful engines, and agile handling, the 2015 Lexus RC placed in the upper half of our luxury small car ranking when new. The sports car’s distracting infotainment system and relatively high total cost of ownership held it back from earning a higher score. As a coupe, the RC has tight rear seats and a small trunk, but these issues are par for the course for such a vehicle.
The RC is available with two engines: a 3.5-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8. The standard 3.5-liter V6 engine makes 306 horsepower. The available V8 is rated at a healthy 467 horsepower. Both engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic are available for models with the V6 engine. The V8 engine is a gem but commands more money on the used market.
2016 Lexus CT Hybrid
U.S. News Score: 8.1/10 | Average Price: $19,622 | Total Cost of Ownership: 9/10
In the luxury small car class, the 2016 Lexus CT Hybrid ranked at the very top when new. The CT Hybrid boasts excellent fuel economy figures, top-notch safety ratings, and a fantastic predicted reliability rating. When it comes to the total cost of ownership, the CT Hybrid has the best score of any used Lexus on this list.
Power for the CT Hybrid comes from a four-cylinder engine and two electric motors that produce 134 horsepower. While the small car feels sluggish on the highway, it’s incredibly efficient, delivering class-leading fuel economy figures of 43 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. If you’re looking for some sportiness, the available F-Sport package adds a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, a large rear spoiler, and sporty interior and exterior elements.
2016 Lexus NX
U.S. News Score: 8.3/10 | Average Price: $29,791 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.5/10
In the competitive luxury compact SUV segment, the 2016 Lexus NX finished near the top of our ranking. There’s little the NX gets wrong, with an attractive interior, spacious seats, and a comfortable ride. The NX also comes with an efficient-yet-peppy turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Value is another one of the NX’s strong suits, as the vehicle won our 2016 Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money award.
The NX’s cabin is one of the SUV’s major highlights. An upscale design, high-quality materials, and high-end convenience features make the NX's interior a nice place for drivers and passengers. Synthetic leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rearview camera are standard. Be warned though, the NX’s optional upgraded infotainment system can be difficult to operate.
2016 Lexus IS
U.S. News Score: 8.4/10 | Average Price: $27,135 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.2/10
The 2016 Lexus IS was our top-ranking vehicle in the luxury small car class. The IS stands out thanks to its balanced ride, high-end cabin, and wealth of features. Standard equipment on the IS includes dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch display, two USB ports, push-button start, synthetic leather upholstery, a moonroof, and eight-way power front seats.
Lexus offers the 2016 IS with two different engines. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, while a 3.5-liter V6 is available. The base engine produces 241 horsepower, while the available V6 is rated at 306 horsepower. While the turbocharged engine has plenty of power for everyday use, the V6 is the livelier choice. All-wheel drive is available with both engines.
2018 Lexus LC
U.S. News Score: 8.6/10 | Average Price: $76,339 | Total Cost of Ownership: 6.1/10
The 2018 Lexus LC arrived as an all-new model in 2018, giving the automaker a new flagship sports car. The LC immediately impressed with its refined handling, strong engines, high-quality materials, and upscale design. Unlike many other high-end sports cars, the LC has a superb predicted reliability score and a (relatively) low total cost of ownership score.
Beyond the LC’s exquisite design, the car’s engines also play a pivotal role in helping the coupe stand out. The standard engine in the LC is a 5.0-liter V8 that makes 471 horsepower, while a 354-horsepower hybrid powertrain that includes a 3.5-liter V6 and two electric motors is available. Both engines endow the LC with peppy performance, but the V8 has that signature growl that the hybrid powertrain simply can’t match.
2017 Lexus ES
U.S. News Score: 8.6/10 | Average Price: $31,416 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.3/10
While the 2017 Lexus ES isn’t as sporty as most rivals, few can match the midsize luxury sedan’s comfortable ride quality, spacious cabin, strong safety scores, and a stellar predicted reliability rating. Additionally, the ES is an excellent value option, winning our 2017 Best Luxury Midsize Car for the Money award. Unlike similar midsize luxury sedans, the ES has a fairly low total cost of ownership.
For 2017, Lexus added a variety of standard driver-assistance features to the ES. Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control are included with all models. The standard infotainment was updated, too. Every 2017 ES comes with an 8-inch display, Bluetooth, a USB port, voice recognition, Siri Eyes Free, and eight audio speakers.
2016 Lexus ES Hybrid
U.S. News Score: 8.6/10 | Average Price: $29,634 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.8/10
The 2016 Lexus ES Hybrid arrived with a refreshed exterior and interior styling, though it has maintained the strong attributes from the previous model year. The ES Hybrid features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that make a combined output of 200 horsepower. Perhaps the best part about the ES Hybrid is its stellar fuel economy, with EPA-estimated figures of 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
With a quiet, serene cabin and a smooth ride, the ES Hybrid is a well-mannered car that won’t beat you up after an entire day of driving. Despite the hybrid powertrain, the ES manages to offer spacious seating for all passengers, especially in the back where there’s an ample amount of head- and legroom.
2016 Lexus GS Hybrid
U.S. News Score: 8.8/10 | Average Price: $42,480 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.2/10
In our ranking of luxury midsize cars, the 2016 Lexus GS Hybrid was tied for No. 1 with two other Lexus vehicles. Despite its large stature, the GS Hybrid comes with an efficient powertrain that carries EPA estimates of 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. With a combined output of 338 horsepower thanks to a V6 engine and two electric motors, the GS Hybrid feels sprightly in a straight line.
The 2016 model year saw the GS Hybrid benefit from refreshed exterior styling that brought a more aggressive design. Navigation and blind spot monitoring were added as standard equipment, which bolstered the sedan’s already excellent list of standard features. The GS Hybrid is a great vehicle for families, too, winning our 2016 Best Hybrid Car for Families award.
2016 Lexus RX 350
U.S. News Score: 8.8/10 | Average Price: $38,926 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.3/10
The 2016 Lexus RX 350 isn’t the sharpest handling vehicle in its class, and the standard infotainment system is tricky to use. Still, it's one of the best used luxury midsize SUVs available. The RX 350 boasts a luxe interior, a coddling ride, and adequate seating space in both rows. You’ll also get a long list of standard features that few competitors can match.
While the RX 350 offers a relatively small cargo area, with just 18.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, the midsize SUV offers great rear head- and legroom in the class. The IIHS named the 2016 RX 350 a Top Safety Pick+, while the SUV is offered with a variety of available safety features. Predicted reliability is fantastic, too.
2015 Lexus RX Hybrid
U.S. News Score: 8.8/10 | Average Price: $32,984 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.4/10
The 2015 Lexus RX Hybrid was the last iteration before the model received a full redesign. This RX Hybrid was one of the few hybrid SUVs on the market at the time, offering an efficient V6 engine paired with an electric motor. Combined output is rated at 295 horsepower, while models with front-wheel drive are rated to get up to 32 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
The RX Hybrid provides occupants a spacious and comfortable cabin. The rear seats can slide and recline to accommodate taller passengers. With the rear seats folded, the RX Hybrid offers up to 80.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which is great for the class.
2015 Lexus GS
U.S. News Score: 8.9/10 | Average Price: $29,690 | Total Cost of Ownership: 8.1/10
The 2015 Lexus GS is a midsize luxury sedan that can seemingly do it all. As a result, it landed at the top of our ranking for luxury midsize cars. The sole engine option is a reasonably strong 3.5-liter V6 that makes 306 horsepower, and the vehicle also offers athletic handling. Available all-wheel drive provides drivers with the confidence to tackle inclement weather conditions.
Getting comfortable in the GS should be relatively easy, as the midsize sedan offers spacious accommodations and upscale convenience features. Leather upholstery, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system, a moonroof, and wood trim are standard. The 2015 GS comes with an updated infotainment system that includes an 8-inch display, but Lexus’ Remote Touch controller can be tricky to use.
