2016 Mercedes-Benz G550

Even Mercedes-Benz will admit that few of the G-Class vehicles it sells in America will ever traverse snow banks, swim across rivers, or tackle boulder-strewn trails. However, despite its typical role as a celebrity transporter, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz G550 is a supremely capable off-road vehicle.

The G550, which starts at a cool $119,900, comes with full-time four-wheel drive and three independently locking differentials. Simply put, if conditions are too bad for a G-Class, you shouldn’t be driving.

There’s a cost for the G-Class’ phenomenal inclement weather prowess, however. It gets horrific mileage, struggling to reach 10 mpg when pushed hard (it’s EPA-rated at 12 mpg in the city and up to 14 on the highway). Its handling on paved roads is equally abysmal. But if the zombie apocalypse includes a snowstorm, the G550 is the truck you want.

Because of its low practicality quotient, the 2016 G-Class currently holds the bottom spot in our rankings of luxury large SUVs.
