These Are the Best Mainstream and Luxury Plug-In Hybrids on the Market

Plug-in hybrid vehicles combine the best of battery-electric vehicle technology with the range and easy fueling of a gasoline-powered car. After charging from an external charger, they can travel for some distance on electric power alone, before transitioning to a blend of power from their electric motors and gasoline engines.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) takes away the range anxiety common with pure electric cars. With a PHEV, more range is just a gas station away. There’s no need to find a functional charger to get additional miles of range.

The electric-only range of available plug-in hybrids varies from around a dozen miles to nearly 100. The top speed at which the cars work on battery power alone also varies from slow highway speeds in the 50-mph range to over 100 mph. You’ll want to consider your daily mileage needs before you choose, so you can maximize the amount of time the vehicle travels on low-cost electricity.

Plug-in hybrids tend to come with higher price tags than their traditional hybrid siblings, but most qualify for state and federal tax subsidies that make their net prices more competitive.

We’ve ranked the array of plug-in hybrids available on the market based on their current U.S. News score, EV-only range, hybrid fuel efficiency, electric-only mpg-e (miles per gallon equivalent). The resulting list shows you the best PHEVs in both the mainstream and luxury segments.

Note that the U.S. News overall score can change over time as more expert reviews, safety data, and reliability data become available, so the figures in this feature may not match the scores you see in individual vehicle reviews. The honorable mentions on the last several pages are vehicles for which we don’t have complete scoring information.

Take a look at the following pages to see the variety of plug-in hybrids you can buy or lease today. The list starts with mainstream plug-in hybrid models, then follows with the luxury plug-in hybrid vehicles.
