We Rank 17 Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Many automakers are adding a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) to their list of offerings. The addition of an electric motor offers added horsepower and instant torque, while being more friendly to the environment.

Typically, PHEVs provide more electric-only range than traditional hybrids, due to larger battery packs. This also means that you will get a more substantial federal rebate – up to $7,500 – when purchasing a new PHEV.

This slideshow features nearly every PHEV on the market today, and one that is expected to arrive very soon. Many of the models are similar to their “parent” (gas-powered) models. However, some offer a longer list of standard equipment and technology, and more upscale interiors and amenities, to justify the higher price point. Models are ranked based on U.S. News scoring data. Some models’ scores are taken from the similar “parent” model review.

Highlighted are the models’ electric-only range, and pricing prior to the federal rebate. The rebate varies based on battery capacity.
