Built For the Mud, Dirt, Snow, Rocks, Sand…

Many trucks are used for towing, hauling, and general work site duties, but many more spend their lives on the highway and commuting. But there are those who look forward to the weekend just for the opportunity to get their truck dirty on the trail.

Today, nearly every modern truck is offered in some specific off-road trim. These trucks designed for the trail have beefed up suspensions, off-road tires, ample under-body skid-plates, and often special drivetrain enhancements for managing power to the dirt. Many also have revised front and rear bumpers designed to expose more of the tires to obstacles.

The things that make a truck ideal for off-roading might hamper it in other areas. Knobby tires and trail-ready suspension can often result in a rough on-road ride. So the trucks with the best performance score might not be the top performers on our list.
