If you want the size and utility of an SUV, but you’re concerned about fuel expenditures or fossil-fuel consumption, then a hybrid SUV might be the vehicle for you.

Hybrid powertrain technology has come a long way since it hit the retail market in full force about a decade ago. For one thing, regular gasoline engines are more efficient than they were back then, but for another, auto manufacturers have made the transition from electric to gasoline power (and back again) less noticeable. In some cases, they’re installing multiple electric engines on the same vehicle, helping those hybrids mitigate some of the horsepower and torque issues that on their way to being outdated concerns.

Still, compared to other segments, there aren’t a lot of hybrid SUVs to choose from. Just eight were released in 2016, but they span all price points, from less than $30,000 for a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to nearly $90,000 for a decked-out Porsche Cayenne Hybrid.
