2016 Chevrolet Tahoe: Performance

The standard engine is Chevrolet's 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 that is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. It moves the Tahoe out smartly and returns a respectable-for-the-class 23 mpg on the highway. A selectable locking all-wheel drive system is optional, as is a two-speed automatic-locking transfer case with low-range gearing.

The Tahoe and its siblings give you multiple suspension choices: The base Smooth Ride suspension does a decent job keeping things on an even keel. An upgraded suspension on models with the Towing Package adds air springs to keep things level in back. The Magnetic Ride Control Package significantly improves emergency handling, while the Z71 package stiffens everything up (and adds skid plates, a two-speed transfer case, and a lower final gear ratio) for off road excursions. Yes, you can off-road in your $50,000 family SUV.
