Put Your iPhone on Your Dash With These Non-Luxury Vehicles

Apple CarPlay lets you put the look and feel of your iPhone’s elegant and easy-to-use interface into your car’s infotainment system. Not only can you use many iPhone apps, you can also control the system using Siri to send messages, place phone calls, set destinations, and more.

Because the system is so familiar, it can be less distracting than using a vehicle’s proprietary telephone connectivity or navigation system. The system supports most iPhones dating back to the iPhone 5.

When you have a CarPlay-enabled vehicle, you simply plug your iPhone into the car's USB port, or in some cases, wirelessly connect it. Your familiar phone icons will then appear on the car's screen. While CarPlay doesn't support every app, it does support Apple Maps, iTunes, and Apple's texting system. It also supports many third-party apps, including Google Maps, Pandora, Waze, Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, Stitcher, and iHeartRadio.

Because it streams content directly from your phone, CarPlay and your apps get updated every time you update your phone. Unlike a factory navigation system, which remains basically the same throughout a car’s life, Apple CarPlay evolves with the latest technology as your vehicle ages. When maps change, for example, they’re quickly updated in the apps.

Most, but not all, vehicles with Apple CarPlay also support Android Auto. To learn more about the Android smartphone integration system, read our article on what is Android Auto

To assemble this list, we've looked at non-luxury Carplay-enabled vehicles in our new car rankings and reviews with strong overall and interior scores. Since we continually update our rankings when new information becomes available, the scores shown on the following slides may not precisely match those shown on the individual car review pages.
