There are used cars, and then there are certified pre-owned cars. Both get you into a previously owned car for far less than a new model, but there are significant benefits to choosing a used Mazda that is Mazda certified pre-owned.

Though it may seem like nothing more than a marketing term to make you feel better about buying a used car, there are real differences that make buying a certified pre-owned (CPO) Mazda a better choice. It starts with the peace of mind you’ll have knowing that Mazda stands behind your purchase.

If you buy a used car that isn’t part of a CPO program, you’re not given the same kind of assurances. There’s a risk that the car won’t be as advertised, that something is in disrepair, or that the car has a cringe-worthy history.

There are very specific requirements for a used Mazda to qualify as a CPO vehicle. First, as part of the quality assurance program, all CPO cars can be no more than six years old. Even if the CPO Mazda you’re considering is only a few years old, it still goes through a 150-point inspection by factory-trained technicians to make sure everything is operating properly. This includes checking the air conditioning, heating, interior, brakes, transmission, exterior, and engine. So there are no surprises, your used Mazda is given a thorough inspection before it becomes certified pre-owned.

In addition to the 150-point inspection, every Mazda certified pre-owned vehicle comes with an AutoCheck vehicle history report so you can feel confident about your vehicle’s history and not worry that there were hidden accidents or problems. There is also three-year Buyback Protection from Experian to further set your mind at ease about your purchase. If you find a covered title defect that also meets the Buyback Protection terms and conditions, Buyback Protection refunds your purchase price (up to 110 percent of the NADA Guides published retail value, plus up to $500 in aftermarket accessories).

Mazda is confident about your purchase too, and offers warranties on top of their extensive inspections. A one-year/12,000-mile limited vehicle warranty is included. It starts either when the vehicle’s factory warranty ends or, if it’s already out of warranty, the day you purchase your CPO Mazda. Either way, you’re covered the minute you take ownership of your car.

You also get a seven-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty that covers everything from turbochargers to freeze plugs. If you do have a problem with your car and need to rely on warranty coverage to make a repair, you won’t have to worry about out-of-pocket expenses; there is no deductible on covered repairs.

Mazda also covers you with emergency roadside assistance that’s available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. This complimentary program is available for the duration of the seven-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and it covers you throughout the U.S. and Canada.

It’s hard to imagine wanting to part with a vehicle when it first finds a home in your driveway, but the day may come when you need to sell your car. The limited vehicle warranty and limited powertrain warranty are both fully transferable to the new owner, and there is no cost to make the transfer.

For an added level of security, you can choose to extend your warranty coverage beyond what’s already offered from Mazda. There are a variety of choices available, and available plans cover everything from roadside assistance to the powertrain and feature genuine Mazda parts. These warranties are also fully transferable if you sell your CPO Mazda before the warranties expire.

In CPO Mazda models equipped with satellite radio, buyers also receive a complimentary three-month SiriusXM trial subscription to the All-Access package. It gives you 150 channels featuring everything from music to sports to comedy. If you want to continue the subscription once the free trial expires, you’ll have to pay for it.

There is a wide range of Mazda pre-owned cars to choose from, which are all part of the certified pre-owned program. Whether you’re looking for something small like the Mazda2, a car for the family like the Mazda6, or the fun of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, there’s a certified pre-owned Mazda that’s perfect for you.
