Powerful engine options, a cavernous cabin, and impressive fuel economy estimates help the X3 hold the No. 4 spot on our luxury compact SUV rankings. It also has one of the best safety scores in the class, as well as an above-average reliability rating.

A finalist for our 2016 Best Luxury Compact SUV for Families award, critics praise the X3 for its car like handling and its back seat that’s big enough to fit adults comfortably. If you’re looking for an affordable subcompact SUV with near-luxury amenities, the 2016 Buick Encore should definitely be on your list. Although it may not have the athletic prowess of a Mazda CX-3, the Encore has one of the best interiors in the class and an easy-to-operate infotainment system.

The Encore comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower. Reviewers say the base engine is severely lacking and suggest choosing the optional 153-horsepower engine instead. The Encore currently sits in the No. 4 spot of our subcompact SUV rankings.

2016 Chevy Traverse

2016 Chevrolet Traverse

Tied with the 2016 Dodge Durango at No. 4 in our large SUV rankings, the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse has one of the best cargo capacities in the class, a posh interior, and a reliability rating that is above average. The Traverse comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 281 horsepower, which is adequate for the daily driver.

Inside, the Traverse can seat up to eight people and has sliding second-row seats that make the third row accessible. Though there may not be many standard features, there is a long list of optional features that you can add. The Chevy Traverse was the U.S. News & World Report 2016 Best Large SUV for the Money.

2016 Ford Expedition

Deal: $439 per month for three years with $5,049 due at signing

Coming in just behind the Chevy Traverse in our large SUV rankings is the 2016 Ford Expedition. The Expedition is praised for its easy-to-use infotainment system, smooth ride, and comfortable, large seats. The interior materials are a mix of high- and low-grade, but the interior itself is very attractive, according to reviewers.

Powered by a 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine, the Expedition generates adequate power. If you opt for the towing package you’ll be able to haul over 9,000 pounds, which is better than nearly every other SUV in the class. The expedition gets average fuel economy for the class at 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway.

2016 Honda CR-V
American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Although it only has one engine, a four-cylinder that produces 185 horses, it offers enough power for the daily driver to get around town. The CR-V comes standard with a USB port, a rearview camera, and Bluetooth. If you want to splurge for some extras, optional features include push-button start, Honda LaneWatch, adaptive cruise control, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Deal: $259 per month for three years with $2,449 due at signing

The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe, which currently ranks No. 5 of 12 in our midsize SUV rankings, has a good deal this July 4th, partly because of the incoming 2017 Santa Fe. Dealers will be looking to get the older models off their lots as quickly as possible as the new Santa Fes start to roll in.

The 2016 Santa Fe has above-average reliability ratings, an easy-to-use infotainment system, and impressive engine options that include a turbocharged four-cylinder and a powerful V6. It was a finalist for our 2016 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money award and has a multitude of driver assistance features.

2016 Mazda CX-5

2016 Mazda CX-5

If you’re someone who appreciates a vehicle that’s fun to drive, look no further than the 2016 Mazda CX-5. The CX-5 is praised for its carlike handling, which is one of the reasons it was a finalist for our 2016 Best Compact SUV for the Money award.

The CX-5 has a multitude of available safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and rear cross traffic alert. Because of those features, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the CX-5 a Top Safety Pick+. The CX-5 currently sits third in our compact SUV rankings.

2016 Jeep Renegade

Deal: $149 per month for three years with $999 due at signing on Renegade Sport FWD

Currently third place in our subcompact SUV rankings and No. 6 in off-road SUVs, the 2016 Jeep Renegade is one of the most capable off-road vehicles currently on the market. The Renegade’s interior is one giant homage to Jeep as a whole, with classic Jeep grille icons infused on headlights, taillights, speakers, and more.

A new model in 2015, the Renegade is one of the smallest vehicles in Jeep’s lineup. Besides its off-road prowess, the Renegade has impressively nimble handling, something you don’t expect when you hear the name Jeep. A finalist for our 2016 Best Subcompact SUV for Families award, the Renegade can keep you and your family safe whether you’re on or off the road.

2016 Lexus NX

2016 Lexus NX
Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

Deal: $329 per month for three years with $2,529 due at signing on NX 200t

Our 2016 Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money, the 2016 Lexus NX has a luxurious cabin, comfortable seats, and composed handling around corners. The NX may not be the most athletic car in the segment, but it holds its own with adequate power from a four-cylinder, 235-horsepower engine.

Standard on the NX is dual-zone automatic climate control, Siri Eyes Free, satellite radio, and a 7-inch display operated by a joystick control mounted on the console. The interior comes with leatherette upholstery on supportive seats, and the NX also has some of the most spacious rear seats in the class. All of that and more help put the Lexus NX at No. 5 on our luxury compact SUV rankings.

2016 Kia Sportage

Deal: $199 per month for three years with $1,999 due at signing

With the redesigned 2017 Kia Sportage hitting the market, the 2016 Sportage is available with impressive deals across the country. The Sportage, which currently sits in the ninth spot on our compact SUV rankings, comes standard with an impressive turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 182 horsepower.

Even though it has impressive performance, the interior of the Sportage is what keeps it from moving up in the rankings. The cabin is full of hard plastics, the cargo capacity is low for the class, and some test drivers wish there were more padding in the seats. However, both the navigation system and dashboard controls are easier to use than those in rival vehicles.
