Here at U.S. News, we update our car rankings weekly so we can give you the most up-to-date picture of what the automotive press thinks about the cars currently on the market, as well as the most recent reliability and safety data. Every February, however, we take a snapshot of our rankings and use it to build our Best Cars for the Money awards.

2016 Best Cars for the Money
(American Honda Motor Co, Inc./Audi of America, Inc./General Motors/Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc/U.S. News amp; World Report)

The Best Cars for the Money award winners are the cars, SUVs, trucks and minivans that have the best combination of quality and value in their classes. We measure quality by each model’s overall score from our new car rankings. To capture value, we teamed up with the real-time pricing experts at TrueCar  to get the current average price paid for each vehicle. We combined that data with total ownership cost data from Vincentric. The result is a composite value score that highlights cars, SUVs, trucks and vans that you won’t pay too much for now and that will continue to be good values in the long term.

The resulting list of 22 winners across 23 different car classes (the Honda Fit won both Best Subcompact Car for the Money and Best Hatchback for the Money) has something for every car buyer. Looking for a great family car that will leave some money in your budget to save for your kids’ college? Check out the Best Minivan for the Money, the Honda Odyssey. Minivans aren’t your style? Consider the Nissan Murano or Honda Pilot. The Murano is the Best 2-Row SUV for the Money, and the Pilot is the Best 3-Row SUV for the Money.
