Several crossover SUVs provide three rows of seating, but comfort and space in the third row varies considerably from model to model. Some have barely enough room for kids, while others can comfortably accommodate adults. Large SUVs with a traditional body-on-frame construction typically have plenty of space, but you’ll often pay a price in terms of fuel economy, maneuverability and ride quality. If you need three adult-friendly rows of seats but don’t want to sacrifice a car-like ride and competitive fuel efficiency, consider one of these crossovers with exceptionally spacious third row seats.
The redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot is one of the few midsize crossovers that offers an accommodating third row, as auto writers report that adults have enough space to get comfortable for short trips. They also praise the Pilot’s numerous handy cabin storage areas and top-notch interior materials.
If abundant cargo space is also a priority, you may want to consider a large crossover like the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, which has 116.3 cubic feet of storage space with the second and third row folded down. When in use, the third row is spacious enough for adults, critics report, and there’s still room behind those seats for some carry-on bags.
The 2015 Buick Enclave is another large crossover with good seating space, as reviewers report there’s ample legroom in the third row. They also appreciate that the second row slides forward to make accessing the back row easier. On the road, the Enclave’s ride is very quiet and composed, test drivers say.
If you’re willing to spend a little more, some luxury crossover SUVs boast impressive third-row space. The redesigned 2016 Volvo XC90 can adequately accommodate adults in its third row, critics report, and they note that the front seats are some of the most comfortable and supportive in the class.
Another luxury midsize crossover with stellar space is the 2015 Infiniti QX60. Auto writers say its adjustable second row provides easy access to the third row and allows for plenty of legroom. The QX60 also gets the best fuel economy in city driving of any non-hybrid in the class at an EPA-estimated 21 mpg.
Stepping up in size, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a luxury large crossover with a third row that reviewers say is easily accessible and adult-friendly. They also report that the GL’s first-rate interior materials make the cabin one of the most luxurious in the class.
If you can get by with a third row that’s suitable for kids only, critically-acclaimed crossover SUVs like the 2015 Toyota Highlander, 2016 Kia Sorento, 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2015 BMW X5 and 2016 Acura MDX are great choices.
