Luxury compact SUVs continue to be popular among consumers, and Mercedes-Benz is vying for a greater slice of the pie with one of its newest models. The 2016 Mercedes GLC-Class is all-new to the brand's SUV lineup, slotting above the subcompact GLA-Class. Mercedes-Benz says the GLC delivers more space and technology than the GLK-Class that it replaces. The Mercedes GLK debuted for the 2010 model year.

Mercedes says the GLC is longer and more spacious than the GLK, with more rear-seat space and greater cargo capacity. The GLC 300 is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 241 horsepower. Mercedes hasn't provided information about any other powertrains, although Autoblog predicts that a V6 and diesel-powered version of the GLC are likely to be available in the future. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard, and Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system and an adjustable air suspension are available. Fuel economy information has not yet been released.

Leatherette upholstery is standard and leather is available. The 2016 GLC comes standard with a 7-inch center stack display and Bluetooth. Navigation, a Burmester audio system, a hands-free liftgate and a panoramic sunroof are optional.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is also available with a number of driver assistance features, including Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control, steering assist, pedestrian detection, cross traffic alert, blind spot assist and lane keep assist. A 360-degree camera system and parallel park assist are also available.

The controls for these features are housed in a cabin that publications such as Car and Driver find very appealing. "A spitting image of the C-class cabin we love so much, the GLC’s interior is a cut above anything else in the segment right now, and the materials, detailing, and finish all put the GLK’s to shame," the publication writes.

Mercedes-Benz says the 2016 GLC-Class will hit dealers this November. Pricing information hasn't yet been released, but for reference, the 2015 GLK starts at $37,900.
