The subcompact sport utility vehicle class is expanding, and Mazda is zooming in to join the action. The 2016 Mazda CX-3 made its global debut in November, and yesterday, Mazda announced pricing information for its new subcompact SUV.

The 2016 CX-3 starts at $20,840, which includes $880 in destination fees. At this price, the CX-3 undercuts the 2015 Chevrolet Trax ($20,995) and 2015 Nissan Juke ($21,075), but is more expensive than rivals like the 2016 Honda HR-V ($19,995) and 2015 Jeep Renegade ($18,990).

The CX-3 comes standard with front-wheel drive and is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 146 horsepower. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. All-wheel drive costs an additional $1,250. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 29/35 mpg city/highway, which bests the ratings of the 2015 Nissan Juke, Chevy Trax and Jeep Renegade and is about the same as those of the 2016 Honda HR-V.

Standard features in the 2016 Mazda CX-3 include a rearview camera, push-button start and the Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen and Bluetooth. Features like navigation, heated front seats, blind spot monitoring, proximity key, a power sunroof, leather and faux suede upholstery, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio and HD Radio are available. The $1,920 i-Activesense package available on the top Grand Touring trim includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, city brake assist and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Publications such as Car and Driver have already test driven the CX-3 and are pleased with the value that it offers for its price. "Stir in the CX-3’s fun-to-drive factor, excellent fuel economy, style, and premium-feeling interior, and the little Mazda’s value factor swells even farther."

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is slated to hit dealerships in mid-August. How do you think it will fare against other subcompact SUVs?
