While the typical midsize SUV offers the seating space and cargo versatility that appeal to families, some SUVs stand out thanks to their available family-friendly features. Conveniences like a power liftgate, a USB port, navigation, a rearview camera and parking sensors are a few of the common standard or optional features in new affordable midsize SUVs, but the following SUVs have even more options that make life easier for parents and kids, as well as excellent reviews from the automotive press.
The 2015 Toyota Highlander is available with a rear-seat Blu-Ray entertainment system and the Driver Easy Speak system, which projects the driver’s voice through the speakers to make it more audible to rear-seat occupants. Additionally, the Highlander earns praise from test drivers for its strong V6 engine, comfortable ride and upscale cabin materials.
Fully redesigned for 2015, the Nissan Murano also has a premium cabin as well as a smooth ride, reviewers say, and they report that the navigation and audio systems are easy to use. The Murano can be equipped with a rear-seat USB port and a 360-degree-view camera system for parking.
The redesigned 2016 Kia Sorento has a similar available 360-degree parking camera system, and Kia’s available UVO eServices can alert parents if their teen driver is exceeding a given speed, driving after curfew or outside the boundaries of a predetermined geographic area. Test drivers say the Sorento’s available turbocharged four-cylinder engine has plenty of power, the cabin has high-quality materials and the second-row seats are spacious.
The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe is available with Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, which has the same parental controls as Kia’s UVO eServices. Critics are pleased with the Santa Fe Sport’s nimble handling, and they like the cabin’s soft-touch materials and intuitive audio and navigation controls.
An inviting cabin and poised handling are high points of the redesigned 2015 Ford Edge. Standard MyKey, which allows parents to set vehicle speed and audio volume limits for younger drivers, and SYNC, which enables users to control a compatible mobile device through voice commands, add to the Edge’s appeal.
