Compact SUVs give you lots of seating and cargo space in a relatively small package, so they're equally at home in the city, suburbs or country. While compact SUVs tend to be more affordable than midsize SUVs and large SUVs, a well-equipped new compact SUV can still cost more than $30,000. You can save considerable money by opting for a used model instead. Here are some of the best used compact SUVs under $20,000.

The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 both offer excellent cargo capacity and have great reliability ratings. Used 2010 and 2011 RAV4s are available with a V6 engine that reviewers said make them feel very potent. The Subaru Forester is one of the few models in the class to come standard with all-wheel drive, whereas all-wheel drive was optional on most of the other models when they were new. The GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox both get great fuel economy with their standard four-cylinder engines.

If you're sticking to a budget of no more than $20,000, many of the used compact SUVs you'll find at this price point are from the 2010 to 2012 model year, so most are available with popular features like Bluetooth and a USB port. Keep in mind that rearview cameras weren't quite as common a few years ago as they are today, so if this is a make-or-break feature for you, you'll need to check to be sure that this feature is available on the SUV you're considering.
