If spring fever has you thinking about buying a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, be prepared to shell out a couple thousand dollars more. Chevrolet's website lists the base price for the 2014 Corvette Stingray as $53,995 including destination. When the redesigned sports car went on sale last year, the starting price for a coupe was $51,995. The convertible also gets a $2,000 price increase to $58,995.
The seventh-generation Corvette Stingray has been a sales success for Chevrolet. Chevy sold 2,438 Corvettes last month. This represents an increase of nearly 149 percent over February 2013, when 980 sixth-generation Corvettes were sold.
The higher demand is the main factor that caused the Corvette's price increase. Autoblog spoke with Monte Doran, a GM communications manager for the Corvette and Camaro, who said, "The reason for the increase is simply that customer demand for the Stingray, and especially the Z51 package, have exceeded our initial expectations." The publication reports that the higher pricing applied as of March 1, but says that those who have already ordered their Corvette are not subject to the price changes.
The price increase does not seem to change automotive journalists’ opinions about the Corvette’s standing amongst its competitors, many of which are more expensive. Car and Driver writes, "Even at the new higher price, though, the Corvette Stingray is a relative performance bargain. …"
The redesigned Corvette has been warmly received by automotive journalists. It earned a spot on Car and Driver's 10 Best List and was named the North American Car of the Year. The Corvette Stingray is our top-ranked luxury sports car, earning reviewer praise for its nimble handling, powerful V8 engine and premium interior.
In early 2015, the high-performance Corvette Z06 will go on sale. It has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that GM says produces approximately 625 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque. For the first time, the Z06 will be available with a removable roof panel and an automatic transmission. Pricing for the Z06 has not yet been announced.
