Chrysler announced the EPA-certified fuel economy ratings for the redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200 this week. With its base 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, the 200 earns an EPA-estimated 23/36 mpg city/highway. With the 295-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6, it returns up to 19/32 mpg. Chrysler says that the standard nine-speed automatic transmission is an important factor that contributes to the 200's improved fuel economy over the outgoing model.
The midsize car segment in which the 200 competes is one of the most hotly-contested segments in the automotive market, and the 200's fuel economy is competitive with that of its rivals, yet is still beat by several models. Current four-cylinder class leaders include the Mazda6 (up to 28/40 mpg), Nissan Altima (27/38 mpg city/highway), Honda Accord (27/36 mpg), Ford Fusion (25/37 mpg) and Chevrolet Malibu (25/36 mpg).
For the V6 200, its 19/32 mpg rating is comparable with V6-powered rivals’ ratings, including the Honda Accord (21/34 mpg), Nissan Altima (22/31) and Toyota Camry (21/31 mpg). With optional all-wheel drive, the V6-powered 200 is rated at 18/29 mpg city/highway. AWD is standard on the Subaru Legacy (24/32 mpg) and optional on the Ford Fusion (22/31 mpg), but unavailable on any other affordable midsize rivals.
Car and Driver says that the 200's fuel economy ratings are good, but points out that, "for the time being, the new 200 lacks a hybrid" or diesel alternative, which are offered by several rivals.
Since its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January, automotive journalists have said that the redesigned 200 is significantly improved over its predecessor in terms of exterior styling and interior design and refinement. Many auto critics are just getting their hands on the 200's keys for the first time now. Our full review and ranking of the 2015 Chrysler 200 is coming soon. In the meantime, you can see pictures, research prices and review specs for the 200.
