Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to add a new luxury compact SUV to its model line. The 2015 GLA250 4Matic will be the smallest member of Mercedes’ family of SUVs, joining the GLK-Class, M-Class, G-Class and GL-Class when it hits showroom floors in the third quarter of 2014. The GLA-Class will be officially introduced next month at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
Compared with other compact crossovers, the 2015 Mercedes GLA-Class is slightly longer than the Range Rover Evoque, but also slightly shorter than the BMW X1. USA Today writes, “The GLA is about five inches shorter and three inches narrower than the already tidy-size GLK. It's nevertheless about six inches longer and an inch wider than the tiny Buick Encore SUV.”
Mercedes-Benz says in a press release that the 2015 GLA250 4Matic will come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The Evoque and X1 offer similar powertrains that each produce 32 more horsepower. A seven-speed automated manual transmission and all-wheel drive will be standard. Mercedes says that the GLA250 4Matic will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds with a top speed of 145 mph. A front-wheel drive GLA250 will also be available in early 2015.
“Mercedes promises high-quality materials inside, with a heavy emphasis on horizontal surfacing and tight gaps,” says Autoweek. “You can choose aluminum or wood trim.” Leatherette upholstery and a power-adjustable driver’s seat will be standard, as well as safety features like Mercedes’ Attention Assist drowsiness monitor. Optional equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, sport seats, leather upholstery, and a power liftgate, as well as lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring systems.
Pricing and full details have yet to be announced, but competitors like the BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque start at $31,725 and $42,040 respectively, while the larger Acura RDX starts at $35,415. Edmunds writes, “The pricing strategy will be the critical part of this equation, especially since many attractive features will be extra-cost items.”
