Chrysler Group is recalling 278,222 vehicles over concern that a rear axle pinion nut could loosen, causing the rear axle to lock up. In such an instance, the rear wheels would no longer turn, which could result in a loss of control of the vehicle and could lead to an accident.
The recall affects the following vehicles:
- 2009-2012 Ram 1500 manufactured between 2/27/08 - 6/30/09 and 12/1/09 - 10/20/11
- 2009-2011 Dodge Dakota manufactured between 2/27/07 - 6/30/09 and 12/1/09 - 9/30/11
- 2009 Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen manufactured between 1/3/08 - 12/18/08
The recall campaign number is 13V038000. NHTSA says this recall is an expansion of recall 12V-474. According to Autoblog, there were 12 accidents reported in relation to the earlier recall.
To remedy the problem, dealers will install a pinion nut retainer, free of charge. Chrysler will notify owners of affected vehicles, and the recall will begin in March. Owners of affected vehicles can call Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 for more information.
