Honda is voluntarily recalling Honda Odyssey minivans and Honda Pilot crossover SUVs because some models may lack rivets that hold the driver airbag’s plastic cover in place. In a statement, Honda says that the recall includes about 748,000 vehicles. Pilot models included in the recall are from the 2009 to 2013 model years, while Odyssey models are from the 2011 to 2013 model years.
Honda says it is not aware of injuries or accidents, but missing rivets could cause the driver’s airbag to malfunction. “This could potentially increase the risk of injury during a crash,” states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Honda will begin contacting affected owners by mail in the middle of February. Once owners are notified, they should take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer for free repairs. For more information, owners can reach Honda at 1-800-999-1009 and NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236. Honda also suggests that owners use its website, www.recalls.honda.com, to find out if their vehicles are included in the recall.
This is Honda’s first recall of the new year, but the automaker had several recalls in 2012. “Last year, Honda issued a number of recalls for everything from faulty overhead electrical wiring and leaky power steering to power window switches that could catch on fire and ignition locks that released keys when older Pilots, Odysseys, and Acura MDXs were not in park,” writes Christian Science Monitor.
