Much of the 2013 North American International Auto Show has focused on halo models like the Audi RS7 and Chevrolet Corvette. While those are the cars dreams are made of, other vehicle debuts are about the cars that most people actually drive. The Honda Urban SUV Concept is that second type of debut.
In a press release, Honda says, "The Urban SUV Concept is intended to provide the basis for a fun-to-drive and fuel-efficient small SUV with aspirational design, flexible packaging and next-generation connectivity targeting active lifestyle customers." Based on the Honda Fit subcompact, the Urban SUV Concept is smaller than the Honda CR-V and features Honda’s flexible rear Magic Seat for carrying cargo.
"In terms of size and price, the Urban SUV will slot beneath the cash-cow CR-V in Honda’s crossover lineup, putting it in the same league as the Nissan Juke and Kia Soul," writes Car and Driver. "Among this competition, the Honda definitely hews closer to the Juke’s sporty brand than the Kia’s urban funkiness."
Truck Trend reports, "The concept has a muscular stance, and wears big flashy wheels that remind us of those on the Accord PHEV. The headlights look like the Acura RLX's jewel-like headlights, while hidden rear door handles mimic those found on the Nissan Juke, giving it a more coupe-like appearance. Given Honda's record of debuting production-like concepts, the final production version of the Urban SUV concept may not deviate far from the concept aside from the addition of ordinary headlights, smaller wheels, chunkier front door handles, and larger side mirrors."
Not everyone is a fan of the Urban SUV Concept's styling. Based on photos obtained before the official debut, Jalopnik said the Urban SUV Concept "continues the latest Honda design trends we as a staff have recently dubbed 'interestingly horrifying.'"
Honda expects to produce a small SUV based on the Urban SUV Concept in the U.S. in 2014.
