If you’ve been thinking a new Ford Mustang Boss 302 might look good in your garage, you'll want to act sooner rather than later.
This year is the last model year for the Boss. Autoweek reported this in November 2012, citing the 2014 dealer order guides. The Boss 302 is a more performance-oriented version of the Mustang GT, with a 444-horsepower variant of that car’s 5.0-liter V8 and a retuned suspension. It is available with a Laguna Seca package that comes with more track-oriented performance upgrades and TracKey, which Ford says “alters more than 200 engine parameters” of the Boss Mustang for track driving.
Autoweek also cites other minor changes in the Mustang line for 2014, including a new exterior appearance package and a few color changes. Otherwise, the 305-horsepower V6 model, 420-horsepower Mustang GT and 662-horsepower Shelby GT500 Mustang are largely unchanged.
The Mustang competes against muscle cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. Of the three, the Mustang is the most affordable, with a starting price of $22,200. The Camaro starts at $23,345, and the Challenger at $27,295. All three come with a base V6 engine and offer two optional V8s. Currently, all three models feature designs that pay homage to designs popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the heart of the muscle car era.
However, the Mustang is slated for a full redesign for the 2015 model year, and some publications, including Car and Driver, think big changes are in store. Among those changes are a new overall look, as the publication believes the next Mustang “will draw from a styling language set forward by several concept cars, including the Evos, as well as production models like the brand-new Fusion.” Performance-wise, they believe the next Mustang will feature an independent rear suspension and may offer a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in addition to V6 and V8 choices.
Car and Driver predicts that the next Mustang will arrive in 2014, which would coincide with the Mustang’s 50th anniversary. So if you’re fond of the current car’s styling, you’ve got about a year before the new model emerges.
