Audi is set to debut a high-performance version of its luxury compact SUV at the North American International Auto Show next week in Detroit. Just like the Audi Q5 3.0T, the new 2014 Audi SQ5 will pack a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine under its hood. However, with 354 horsepower, the SQ5 produces 82 more horsepower than the Q5 3.0T. Car and Driver points out that “every 3.0-liter V-6 in Audi’s lineup could be considered lesser than what’s under the hood of the SQ5,” noting that models like the Audi S4 and S5 use the same engine, but make 21 less horsepower.
Like other Q5 models, the SQ5’s engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Audi says in a press release that the SQ5 has a top speed of 155 mph, and will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.3 seconds. In comparison, the Q5 3.0T and BMW X3 xDrive35i can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 and 5.5 seconds, respectively.
Along with more power, the SQ5 also gets a sport-tuned suspension that lowers it 1.2 inches, as well as a choice of 20- or 21-inch wheels. “An optional Dynamic Steering Package varies ratio as well as assist, and Quattro vectors torque to sharpen handling like similar systems from BMW, Acura and others,” writes Cars.com.
Unique interior styling cues include gray gauges with white numbers, as well as aluminum-look pedals and shift paddles. Leather and Alcantara upholstery and aluminum trim are also standard. Pricing and full specifications haven’t been announced yet, but the SQ5 will go on sale in the third quarter of 2013.
