If you're a big fan of the Infiniti G, JX, M, FX or EX, prepare yourself for a change. Infiniti announced that starting with the 2014 model year, all of its model names will begin with the letter Q.
"The premium automotive brand will see its model range simply prefixed either by Q – for sedans, coupes and convertibles, or QX, for crossover and SUV models", writes Infiniti in a press release. "Each model will be further identified by a double digit representing hierarchy within the range."
The Infiniti M will become the Q70, while the G coupe and convertible will become the Q60. A new sedan making its debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show will be the Q50, and it will replace the G sedan. The QX SUV will become the Q80, the FX will become the QX70, the JX will become the QX60 and the EX will become the QX50.
The news of the change has been met with some scepticism in the automotive press. Jalopnik characterizes the change as "a bid to confuse those of us who cover cars, and maybe those who buy them. …"
USA Today also says the move "risks further naming confusion for a brand already awash in letters and numbers. Until now, Infiniti picked a letter denoting a product line and added a couple numbers based on engine size. For instance, the G sports sedan has a 3.5-liter engine. Result: G35."
The New York Times explains that the letter Q was chosen because of the Infiniti Q45 sedan, the first car the company sold in the U.S. Still, it asks, "How many customers remember the original Q45? How much heritage fits in 23 years, the age of a recent college grad?"
