While most people are recalling fond holiday memories, car companies are recalling cars and trucks. General Motors is recalling about 118,800 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon compact pickups. Hyundai is recalling about 18,000 Velosters in two separate recalls.
The recall on GM’s compact pickup trucks affects those from the 2010 to 2012 model year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected vehicles’ hoods may be missing a secondary latch. If the hood latch is not engaged, NHTSA says the hood may open without warning, which would block the driver’s view ahead, increasing the risk of a crash.
GM will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles and ask them to look for the secondary latch. Dealers will replace the hood on affected vehicles free of charge. The recall will start around Jan. 17, 2013. Owners can contact GMC at 1-866-996-9463 or Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438. The recall campaign number is 12319.
Hyundai’s first Veloster recall, campaign number 107, affects about 4,500 2012-models equipped with a manual transmission. NHTSA says that the parking brake may not function properly, as road dirt and moisture could cause components of the parking brake to bind. As a result, the brake may not fully engage, and the vehicle could move unintentionally. Hyundai will replace the rear brake caliper assembly free of charge.
The second recall, campaign number 108, affects about 13,500 vehicles from the 2012 model year equipped with a panoramic sunroof. According to NHTSA, the sunroof assembly may have been weakened during factory installation. The panel may break while the vehicle is in motion, which could cause injury and/or a crash. Hyundai will inspect the roof panel and replace them as necessary, free of charge.
Hyundai will notify owners of affected Veloster models. Both recalls will begin in January. Owners can contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.
