2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Mercedes-Benz is recalling about 8,675 M-Class SUVs from model years 2012 and 2013 due to an all-season floor mat that may not fit properly. In some cases, this could cause the gas pedal to stick and could make the SUV accelerate unintentionally. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t said whether any injuries have been reported. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem was identified in a Mercedes-Benz facility by an employee.

These floor mats are a dealer-purchased optional accessory, rather than a standard factory accessory, so not every 2012 and 2013 M-Class will have them. The Detroit News reports that a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz says the automaker hasn’t received any reports of crashes or injuries related to the mats, and that owners who have these floor mats should remove them. According to NHTSA documents, the affected floor mats will be replaced with mats that fit better and won’t be able to trap the gas pedal.

All 2013 Mercedes-Benz vehicles come with a brake override system, which cuts power to the throttle when the brake is depressed at the same time as the gas pedal. That means anyone who experiences this pedal entrapment problem can press the brake pedal and turn the SUV off when it comes to a stop.

Mercedes-Benz will notify owners starting next month to replace the defective floor mats free of charge. To stay abreast of the recall, owners can check NHTSA’s website or call its vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
