2012 BMW 3-Series

The 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Eco received five-star overall safety ratings from the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan earned five out of five stars in side crash tests and rollover risk tests, and four stars in front crash tests. While the 2012 3-Series coupe and convertible haven’t been thoroughly tested, they did receive five stars in rollover tests. “The 3 Series joins about 15 other 2012 vehicles with five-star ratings,” Kicking Tires reports.

The 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan was also named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick, which means it earned top scores of “good” in front, side, rear and roof strength tests. The 3-Series’s standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes and six airbags, while a rearview camera, night vision with pedestrian recognition, a lane departure warning system, a camera-based collision warning system and an automatic crash response system are all available as options.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Eco received the top rating of five stars in NHTSA’s front and side crash tests, and four stars in rollover tests. GM says in a statement that the Malibu Eco is “among the first 2013 GM models to receive this rating.” This is an improvement over the 2012 model’s four-star overall NHTSA score, four-star front and rollover score and five-star side-impact score. While the IIHS hasn’t rated the base 2013 Malibu yet, the Eco model is a Top Safety Pick. The 2013 Malibu has eight airbags standard, while rear-seat side-impact airbags, a rearview camera and lane departure warning system with forward collision alert are optional.
