Volkswagen announced pricing this week for the diesel-powered 2013 Beetle TDI, which will go on sale in August. Starting at $24,065 (including a $770 destination charge), the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI will carry the automaker’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged diesel engine, which generates 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen uses the same engine in diesel-powered versions of the 2012 Golf, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen and Passat, all of which can achieve combined fuel economy estimates of 34 mpg from the EPA.

An official fuel economy rating for the Beetle TDI isn’t available yet, but Volkswagen predicts in a press release that models equipped with a six-speed manual transmission will achieve 32/41 mpg city/highway. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission will also be available, but Volkswagen hasn’t provided any estimates on that model’s fuel economy.

The 2013 Beetle TDI rings in at roughly $3,500 more than the base 2012 Beetle 2.5L, which gets 22/31 mpg city/highway with a manual transmission. Standard equipment on the 2013 Beetle TDI includes power windows, cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, Bluetooth, satellite radio and a media interface with iPod cable. Three trim levels are available, all of which offer Volkswagen’s dual-clutch automatic transmission as an $1,100 option. Full pricing details (including destination) are listed below:

  • $24,065 - Beetle TDI
  • $25,665 - Beetle TDI with sunroof
  • $26,965 - Beetle TDI with sunroof, premium audio system and navigation

That pricing undercuts most of Volkswagen’s other diesel-powered vehicles. “The 2013 Beetle TDI is now the second-cheapest diesel car in Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup behind the Jetta TDI sedan, which starts at $23,545,” says Motor Trend. The 2012 Golf TDI and Jetta SportWagen TDI start at $25,005 and $26,310, respectively, while the 2012 Touareg TDI, which uses a larger, turbodiesel V6, starts at $47,745.
