BMW announced Saturday that it will bring the redesigned 3-Series Sports Wagon to U.S. dealerships in the spring of 2013. BMW says in a statement it will announce specs, features and pricing information “at a later date.”
The BMW 3-Series sedan was redesigned for 2012, but the wagon carried over from 2011 mostly unchanged. The revamped 3-Series wagon will be a 2013 model, and will be offered in Sport Line, M Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line trims. BMW says the 2013 3-Series Sports Wagon is bigger than the 2012 model, which results in a 10 percent increase in cargo space. The 2012 3-Series Wagon has 25 cubic feet of cargo space, and with the rear seats folded, cargo space jumps to 60.9 cubic feet. To open the liftgate, the 2013 BMW 3-Series Wagon will offer an optional hands-free system that opens the liftgate automatically when you kick your foot under the rear bumper. This high-tech feature is also available on vehicles like the 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan and 2013 Ford Escape.
Though the 2013 3-Series Wagon will be part of the new generation, auto critics think its exterior style looks very similar to the outgoing model. “Besides the liftgate and the extended roofline, not much has changed in the looks department compared with the redesigned sedan,” Kicking Tires reports. “Even most of the rear-end styling, including the taillights and bumper, look unchanged.”
The 2012 3-Series Wagon has a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that makes 230 horsepower, a six-speed manual or automatic transmission and either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Jalopnik predicts the 2013 3-Series Wagon will offer a powertrain lineup similar to the 2012 3-Series sedan, which includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine.
The 2013 BMW 3-Series Wagon will also offer a panoramic sunroof, color head-up display (which projects information onto the windshield in front of the driver), lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera with an overhead view of the car, a parking assist system, Bluetooth and iPod integration.
