Nissan unveiled the 2013 Altima Wednesday at the New York Auto Show. The Altima received an exterior overhaul and it gets a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), as well as new high-tech safety features and improved fuel economy.
“The new entry is so far superior to the old vehicle in styling, innovation, fuel economy, handling, space and interior that we think this car is going to catapult itself even further than the old one,” Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, said in an interview at the New York Auto Show.
When asked who the 2013 Altima’s target buyer will be, Castignetti said the new Altima will appeal to anyone and everyone. “I do believe that this has more of a broader appeal across generations because of what it offers and the different trim levels it offers,” he said.
Nissan says the 2013 Altima will get up to 38 mpg on the highway thanks to a new CVT, a more aerodynamic body and a weight reduction of about 80 pounds through the use of lighter metal. The 2012 Nissan Altima gets 23/32 mpg city/highway.
Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity will be standard, while navigation, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and moving object detection systems will be optional. The 2013 Altima will be powered by either a 182-horsepower, 2-5-liter four-cylinder engine or a 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6. Both engines are mated to a CVT. The 2012 Altima’s four-cylinder makes 175 horsepower and its V6 produces 270.
The 2013 Nissan Altima goes on sale in June with a base price of $21,500, which is more than the 2012 Altima’s starting price of $20,550. Nissan says there are no plans for a new Altima Coupe or Altima Hybrid at this point.
Castignetti said that when shoppers take a look at the new 2013 Altima, they’re seeing “the best value in the industry.”
