A refreshed 2013 Chevrolet Traverse was revealed ahead of its debut next week at the New York Auto Show. The eight-passenger Traverse receives exterior and interior updates, as well as safety and technology upgrades, Chevrolet says in a press release.

Along with its platform mates, the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, the 2013 Traverse will receive GM’s new center airbag as an option, which is designed to protect front-seat occupants during a side-impact collision. Since the center airbag is new to the market, rivals like the Dodge Durango and Ford Flex currently lack such a feature.

Chevrolet says the 2013 Traverse will feature a new center stack which will house the standard rearview camera display and 6.5-inch touchscreen, as well as the optional MyLink infotainment system. On the outside, the Traverse “sports a new grille, hood, bumper, headlamps and foglamps,” writes Inside Line. “The rear end gets a new liftgate and taillamps.”

Powertrain updates to the 2013 Traverse are minimal. “Despite the upgrades on the inside, the Traverse won’t get any quicker, however, as the current 3.6-liter, direct-injected V-6 engine delivers the same none-too-powerful 281 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque in the refreshed model,” writes Car and Driver. “The six-speed automatic transmission, however, receives both hardware and software tweaks in order to provide more decisive shifts and to maintain fuel-economy numbers of 17 mpg city/24 highway in front-wheel-drive models, and 16/23 in all-wheel-drivers.”

While the EPA has yet to release fuel economy estimates for the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse, the 2012 Traverse, when equipped with all-wheel drive, gets the same 16/23 mpg city/highway fuel economy estimates as the AWD Durango and Flex. Whereas the Traverse is only available with the aforementioned V6 engine, Toyota offers a thriftier four-cylinder engine in the front-wheel drive Highlander, capable of 20/25 mpg city/highway. And unlike the Traverse, some midsize SUVs have upgraded engines that deliver additional power. The Durango is available with a 360-horsepower V8, and Ford recently announced the 2013 Explorer Sport will feature a turbocharged V6 that will produce at least 350 horsepower.

Pricing and a release date for the 2013 Traverse haven’t been announced yet, but the 2012 Traverse starts at $29,510.
