The Outlander Sport is in its second year of production, but the 2011 model wasn’t a Top Safety Pick. To receive the 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick award, the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport had to receive the highest score of “Good” in front, side, rollover and rear safety tests. The IIHS says changes “to the roof structure of this vehicle to improve rollover protection” helped improve the Outlander Sport’s crash test scores.
Shoppers in the market for a safe small SUV have many options. Other affordable compact SUVs that are Top Safety Picks include the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Journey, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Jeep Patriot (with optional side torso airbags), Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Not all of these models have been crash tested by the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but the majority of them receive at least a four-star overall score from NHTSA out of five stars. NHTSA has only rated the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for rollover risk, giving it four out of five stars.
