2013 Mazda CX-5

Mazda is planning to bring its Skyactiv-D diesel engine to the U.S. in early 2013, but the automaker hasn’t said which vehicle it will be offered in. The diesel engine will be available in Japan in the new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover.

While we don’t know what sort of fuel economy estimates a diesel-powered CX-5 would get from the EPA, some preliminary data is available. “Equipped with an idling-stop system, the Skyactiv-D 2.2 in the CX-5 will develop 310 pound-feet of torque, while returning average fuel economy of 44 mpg on Japan's JC08 test cycle,” Inside Line reports.

The 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine produces 173 horsepower in European-spec models, according to Car and Driver. Car and Driver predicts that the Skyactiv-D engine will be available on the Mazda CX-5 initially in the U.S., and potentially the Mazda3 and Mazda6. The 2013 CX-5 that will be sold in the U.S. has the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine, and it produces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The 2012 Mazda3 has the same Skyactiv gas engine that makes 155 horsepower, but slightly less torque at 148 pound-feet. The 2012 Mazda6’s four-cylinder gas engine produces 170 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque.

Car and SUV shoppers in the U.S. who want a diesel engine but don’t want a heavy-duty full-size truck currently can choose from German automotive brands, like BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. However, rival automakers are starting to roll out diesel options for consumers.

“Mazda sees Volkswagen's success with diesel engines in North America and noted that the German automaker has the diesel market to itself - at least at its price point,” Truck Trend reports. Domestic vehicles like the Chevrolet Cruze and Jeep Grand Cherokee will soon offer a diesel engine option as well.
