Though most of us will never be able to afford an exotic car, many of these brands’ technological advancements eventually filter down to our everyday cars. Daimler AG, the owner of Mercedes-Benz, has announced that Maybach will no longer be one of those technology-exporting brands, starting in 2013. The brand is being discontinued after the 2012 model year.
The Maybach brand has been in trouble for a long time, though it managed to limp through the automotive world’s shakeup in 2009. “Daimler has not turned a penny profit on Maybach since 2002 when it was introduced,” reports Forbes.
However, its competitors have been extremely successful during that same stretch of time. “The brand's $375,000 sedans failed to gain a foothold, even as other ultra-high-end marques like Volkswagen's Bentley and BMW's Rolls-Royce flourished,” notes Jalopnik.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the redesigned Mercedes-Benz S-Class’ debut in 2013 will signal the replacement for Maybach. “Mercedes will double variations of the 72,000-euro ($95,000) S-Class to six as it seeks to boost annual vehicle sales by at least 10,000 a year and step up its challenge to BMW as the world's top luxury-car maker,” the newspaper notes.
The S-Class’ expanded lineup means potential Mercedes-Benz buyers will have more options in a lower price class than the outgoing Maybachs. “By opting to expand the S-Class range, Daimler hopes to still compete with the likes of Rolls Royce and Bentley, aiming to capture more of the market that the two storied British brands have successfully expanded into with ‘lower-end’ models that range between $180,00 and $300,000,” predicts The Wall Street Journal.
