The 2012 Volkswagen Passat and 2012 Audi A6 are the newest recipients of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award. The IIHS named these cars Top Safety Picks for earning the top score of Good in front, side, rear and rollover crash tests. Vehicles also have to have standard electronic stability control, which is required by the federal government on all 2012 model-year and newer vehicles.
Both the Passat and A6 were redesigned for the 2012 model year. The 2012 VW Passat increased in size for the North American market and received a price drop of about $7,000 compared with its 2010 predecessor. The U.S.-built Passat starts at $19,995 and comes standard with Bluetooth, auxiliary audio input and three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
Most of the Audi A6’s changes for 2012 are found inside and under the hood. The A6 is available with either a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. The 2012 A6 starts at $41,700 and comes standard with Bluetooth, USB iPod integration and satellite radio.
