The Best of the Biggest Family Haulers

Whether you’re carpooling or traveling with extended family, sometimes the difference between needing two cars or one comes down to whether one SUV can carry eight passengers, rather than the typical seven.

Most 3-row SUVs can only fit two people in the third row. Some limit the second row to two passengers by installing fancy “captains’ chairs” with arm rests in the second row. (Admittedly, this can also make it easier for kids to crawl through the center to the third row, and it diminishes the need for fancy folding and sliding mechanisms on the outer seats.)

Only a handful of today’s modern crossover SUVs include three seats in both the second and third rows. In some, you need to specify a second-row bench to get that option when captains’ chairs are the default. Most, but not all, full-sized, truck-based SUVs can also seat eight. They’re great if you have a sizeable brood you need to take camping or to the lake with a trailer. Few live up to modern expectations for ride, handling, and fuel economy though, so the ones that made the cut anchor the bottom of our list. Read on to see which eight-passenger SUVs made the cut.
