Affordable 7-Passenger Vehicles
To start this list we’ll include the 10 best affordable 7-passenger vehicles in our rankings. Most of these models won’t bust your budget, with many priced below $40,000.
1) 2018 Honda Odyssey
Price With 7 Seats: $29,990 | U.S. News Overall Score: 9.1/10
The Odyssey is our top-ranked minivan and was crowned the 2018 Best Minivan for the Money and 2018 Best Minivan for Families. It provides class-leading safety scores, historically good reliability scores, and plenty of standard features. Additionally, its standard 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 offers plenty of power – even with a car full of people.
1) 2018 Honda Odyssey
Interior Score: 9.0/10 | Safety: 9.7/10
There is seating up to eight in the Odyssey, although the base LX trim only comes with seating for seven. The Odyssey is a family friendly option: You can opt for practical features like spill-resistant cloth upholstery and a built-in vacuum. It also offers a plethora of interior space. There is plenty of leg- and headroom in all three rows – even for teens and adults.
2) 2018 Ford Expedition
Price With 7 Seats: $63,325 | U.S. News Overall Score: 9.4/10
The Expedition is among the highest-scoring SUVs in our rankings. It has class-leading scores in several individual categories (like critics’ rating and performance) and was named our 2018 Best Large SUV for Families. The Expedition offers the trifecta: a strong engine, an upscale cabin, and plenty of usable cargo space.
2) 2018 Ford Expedition
Interior Score: 8.7/10 | Safety: TBD
The Expedition offers seating for eight in its standard configuration. To get seating for only seven, upgrade to the Limited trim and add the second-row bucket seats as an option. Leather trimmed seating, power-reclining third-row seats, wireless phone charging in the front, and third-row USB charging ports come standard in the seven-seat configuration. All three rows provide plenty of room for adults and kids – so a packed car won’t feel so packed.
3) 2018 Chrysler Pacifica
Price With 7 Seats: $26,995 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.9
The Pacifica was new for 2017 and made quite the splash in the minivan segment. It comes with a ton of features, a high-end interior, and good fuel economy. It’s also available in a hybrid variant that will save you even more at the pump. Equipped with its standard 287-horsepower V6 engine, the Pacifica will also impress on the highway. Its acceleration is lively and it has a very smooth ride.
3) 2018 Chrysler Pacifica
Interior Score: 8.8/10 | Safety: 9.7/10
The Pacifica was designed with family in mind. In its seven-seat configuration, the Pacifica boasts plenty of room for the whole family – even room for your growing teens. It also has one of the most convenient storage features in the class. Chrysler’s Stow n’ Go seating system allows you to fold the second-row seats into the floor. This feature makes the transition from hauling the hockey team to hauling your new dresser quick and easy.
Unfortunately, the Pacifica falls short in terms of comfort. The front offers padded and comfortable seats, but the second and third rows are less comfortable.
4) 2018 Kia Sorento
Price With 7 Seats: $30,390 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.6/10
The Kia Sorento is one of the best midsize SUVs on the market right now. This crossover has class-leading safety scores and the longest warranty in the segment. Because it has a long list of features at an affordable price, it was named our 2018 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money award winner.
4) 2018 Kia Sorento
Interior Score: 8.3/10 | Safety: 9.7/10
The base Sorento comes with two rows standard, but a third can be added to the LX trim. To add the third row, you’ll have to add the third-row seating package ($1,490) and the Convenience Package ($1,700).
The LX trim comes standard with cloth upholstery and offers plenty of room in the front two rows. Although the third row offers more room than the average midsize SUV with three rows, it’s definitely not as roomy as some of the full-size SUVs and minivans on this list – it’s best left to children.
5) 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
Price With 7 Seats: $53,645 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.6/10
The Chevy Tahoe is a top-ranking large SUV and is an excellent choice for a family: It was named the 2018 Best Large SUV for Families award winner. Compared to other vehicles in its class, it has a high-end interior, an abundance of safety features, and an easy-to-use infotainment system.
5) 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
Interior Score: 8.0/10 | Safety: 8.7/10
The Chevy Tahoe comes standard with seating for eight. To get seating for seven, you’ll have to upgrade to the LT trim and add the second-row bucket seats for an additional $795.
Unfortunately, the Tahoe’s third row isn’t as roomy as other large SUVs’, and its cargo space is below average. However, the seats in the LT trim are adorned in leather and are quite comfortable.
6) 2018 Toyota Highlander
Price With 7 Seats: $38,920 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.7/10
The Highlander ranks well in our midsize SUV rankings because it is well-rounded. It offers good performance, a refined interior, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features. Unfortunately, it suffers from an outdated infotainment system that is a bit overcomplicated.
Despite that one con, its many pros and reasonable price tag earned it a spot as a finalist for our Best 3-Row SUV for the Money award.
6) 2018 Toyota Highlander
Interior Score: 8.4/10 | Safety: 9.3/10
The Toyota Highlander seats eight people in its standard configuration. To get seating for seven, you’ll have to upgrade to the XLE trim and add the (cost-free) option of second-row bucket seats. The XLE trim is a few trims up from the base LE. It comes with leather-upholstered first- and second-row seats and leatherette third-row seats. On top of the standard features included in the base trim (Bluetooth, voice recognition, five USB ports, and a touch-screen infotainment system), the XLE trim adds push-button start, a moonroof, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.
7) 2018 Volkswagen Atlas
Price With 7 Seats: $30,750 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.3/10
The VW Atlas is all-new for 2018 and has already made quite the impression in our midsize SUV rankings. Most notably, it offers driving dynamics of a compact SUV, with enough interior space for a family of seven. Additionally, it has good safety scores and one of the best bumper-to-bumper warranties in the class.
7) 2018 Volkswagen Atlas
Interior Score: 8.8/10 | Safety: 9.7/10
The Atlas provides seating for seven on standard cloth upholstery – although both leather and leatherette upholstery are available. It’s plenty spacious, even in the third row. Unlike most midsize SUVs, adults will have plenty of room in each row. It also offers one of the largest cargo holds in the class: 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 96.8 cubic feet with all of the seats folded down.
8) 2018 Honda Pilot
Price With 7 Seats: $47,470 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.5/10
The 2018 Honda Pilot was a finalist for this year’s Best 3-Row SUV for Families award, and it’s easy to see why. It features a lot of cargo space, a spacious third row, and a comfortable ride. You can also rest easy knowing it has a solid safety score and historically good reliability.
8) 2018 Honda Pilot
Interior Score: 8.1/10 | Safety: 9.3/10
To get exactly seven seats in the Pilot, you’ll have to upgrade to the top-of-the-line Elite trim, which costs $47,470. That configuration will get you second-row heated bucket seats and leather upholstery throughout.
If you’re fine with seating for eight, the base trim starts much cheaper, at $30,900. The base model comes standard with cloth-upholstered seating for eight (the second and third rows are bench seats), a 5-inch display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port.
9) 2018 Toyota Sienna
Price With 7 Seats: $30,750 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.3/10
The Toyota Sienna is the lowest-ranking minivan to make this list. However, it’s no slouch. It’s the only minivan on the market that offers all-wheel drive, it has an intuitive infotainment system, and it provides a surplus of interior space. Unfortunately, it is a bit pricier than some of its rivals.
9) 2018 Toyota Sienna
Interior Score: 8.2/10 | Safety: 9.0/10
You can get seating for seven in the base L trim, top-of-the line Limited trim, and any model that comes with all-wheel drive. The cheapest of these options is the base L trim – it starts at $30,750. This configuration comes with cloth upholstery and a Split & Stow third-row seat (the seat folds into the floor to create more storage space).
Although other minivans (like the Honda Odyssey) have more-comfortable seats, the Sienna’s are comfortable enough. Also, the second-row seats conveniently slide forward to allow parents easier access to the third row.
10) 2018 Mazda CX-9
Price With 7 Seats: $32,130 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.5/10
The Mazda CX-9 is the perfect vehicle for the driver who wants an engaging driving experience but needs room for the whole family. It is one of the best performers in the class – in terms of handling. It also provides a refined interior and good gas mileage.
10) 2018 Mazda CX-9
Interior Score: 8.2/10 | Safety: 10.0/10
The CX-9 accommodates seven passengers on cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery is available on higher trims. All three rows of the CX-9 are spacious enough to accommodate adults. However, getting in and out of the third row can be a bit of challenge.
The CX-9 does have a nice-looking interior, but it lacks a few of the modern features others in its class offer. For example, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay aren’t available at all.
Luxury 7-Passenger Vehicles
If you have a slightly larger budget, a luxurious 7-passenger vehicle may be the right choice for you. Read on to see the 10 best 7-passenger luxury vehicles.
1) 2018 Lincoln Navigator
Price With 7 Seats: $72,055 | U.S. News Overall Score: 9.2/10
The Navigator is our top-ranked luxury large SUV. It’s tremendously spacious inside, has very comfortable seats, and gets above-average fuel economy for the class. And, much like its corporate cousin (the Ford Expedition), it boasts historically good reliability and safety scores.
1) 2018 Lincoln Navigator
Interior Score: 9.2/10 | Safety: TBD
In the base configuration, the Navigator seats seven people. Its cabin is quite refined and comes appointed with various features you would expect in a luxury SUV. Heated front- and second- row seats, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, Active Noise Control, and a modern infotainment system all come standard. These features help to create one of the best ride experiences in the class.
2) 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS
Price With 7 Seats: $69,550 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.9/10
The GLS is the right luxury large SUV for you if you desire a powerful and fuel-efficient engine, a spacious cabin, and a comfortable ride. It comes standard with practical features (like all-wheel drive), and you can get up to 577 horsepower – not bad for the family SUV.
2) 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS
Interior Score: 8.6/10 | Safety: TBD
The GLS seats seven passengers on leatherette upholstery in the base trim. A power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and reclining second-row seats also come standard. The GLS offers plenty of room in the front row and sufficient space in the second and third – although, adults should be able to occupy the rear rows comfortably.
3) 2018 Lexus RX L
Price With 7 Seats: $47,670 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.5/10
The Lexus RX comes standard as a 2-row SUV, but you can upgrade to the RX L to seat seven. This luxury midsize SUV provides a comfortable ride, numerous standard features, and good safety scores. It also has historically good reliability scores.
3) 2018 Lexus RX L
Interior Score: 7.9/10 | Safety: 9.3/10
Although we don’t rank the RX L separately, the RX earns high marks for its comfortable interior. The base RX seats five on leatherette upholstery. It’s spacious enough, although other midsize SUVs do offer a bit more room.
The RX L seats seven on leatherette upholstery. As in many midsize SUVs, the third row is a bit cramped for adults – but there should be plenty of space for children.
4) 2018 Audi Q7
Price With 7 Seats: $49,900 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.7/10
The Q7 is a great SUV if you’re seeking good handling dynamics, a long list of standard safety equipment, and a refined, quiet cabin. It’s a safe and reliable enough to be a practical choice for the family, but it also features enough bells and whistles to satisfy your tech desires. Additionally, it was a runner up for our 2018 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for Families award.
4) 2018 Audi Q7
Interior Score: 8.8/10 | Safety: 9.3/10
The Q7 seats seven people in the base trim. Leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats, and heated front seats come standard. The first and second rows are quite roomy and the seats are plenty comfortable. However, the third row comes up a bit short in terms of legroom. If you only need to transport children in the third row, they should fit comfortably. However, adults may be cramped.
5) 2018 Acura MDX
Price With 7 Seats: $44,200 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.6/10
We named the Acura MDX the 2018 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money because it offers the best bang for your buck. It’s fuel efficient (so you’ll save at the pump), a lot of tech features come standard (so you won’t have to make many upgrades), and the standard engine provides plenty of power. Unfortunately, its cargo hold is on the small side – but otherwise, it offers plenty of interior space.
5) 2018 Acura MDX
Interior Score: 8.0/10 | Safety: 9.7/10
The MDX comes standard with seating for seven on leather upholstery. Heated front seats, power front seats, and a sliding and reclining second row also come standard.
The first and second rows provide plenty of legroom and nicely cushioned seats. However, the second row is a bit lacking in headroom. The third row is cramped – even for a midsize SUV – and best left to children.
6) 2018 Volvo XC90
Price With 7 Seats: $54,050 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.4/10
The XC90 ranks midpack in our luxury midsize SUV rankings. However, it has a lot of interior features, good interior space, and earns great fuel economy. It also claims some of the highest safety scores in the class. It was a finalist for our 2018 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for Families because it’s an all-around impressive SUV.
6) 2018 Volvo XC90
Interior Score: 8.8/10 | Safety: 9.7/10
The XC90 only has seating for five passengers in the base trim. Upgrade to the T6 or T8 level to get seating for seven. In any configuration, the XC90 has one of the nicest interiors in the class – it’s quiet, spacious, and refined. The base Momentum trim with the T6 engine is the cheapest configuration with seven seats. This trim comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, rear sliding seats, and an array of advanced safety and infotainment tech. The first two rows are extremely comfortable and offer plenty of room. The third row provides more space than many competitors, but adults may still feel cramped.
7) 2018 Land Rover Discovery
Price With 7 Seats: $54,285 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.4/10
The Land Rover Discovery offers everything you’d expect in the family SUV, with plenty of off-road capabilities. It also stands out in the crowd for its wide range of powertrain configurations and luxurious cabin. Unfortunately, you’ll have to trade off reliability – the Discovery has historically below-average reliability scores.
7) 2018 Land Rover Discovery
Interior Score: 8.6/10 | Safety: TBD
You can get the Discovery SE (base trim) with seating for seven if you opt for the third-row seating package, which cost you an additional $2,195. Otherwise, the base configuration seats five.
The Discovery SE comes with leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. Adults should be smitten with all three rows of the Discovery. Each row offers comfortable seating and a lot of head- and legroom.
8) 2018 Lexus LX
Price With 7 Seats: $89,980 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.2/10
The Lexus LX is one of our highest-ranking luxury large SUVs. It has a comfortable ride, a high-end cabin, and historically superb reliability ratings. A 2-row model is new for 2018 – but if you want seating for seven, you’ll have to opt for the 3-row version. The LX does disappoint in terms of fuel economy, but four-wheel drive is standard.
8) 2018 Lexus LX
Interior Score: 7.6/10 | Safety: TBD
The LX is priced much higher than many others on this list. It’s about $85,000 for a 2-row model; to get seating for seven you’ll have to spend about $5,000 more. The 3-row model offers plenty of room for first- and second-row passengers. However, the third row is best left to children – adults might find it cramped.
Leather upholstery, power-sliding second-row seats, and power-adjustable front seats come standard.
9) 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser
Price With 7 Seats: $84,315 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.4/10
The Land Cruiser is the LX’s corporate cousin, so it only makes sense that they rank similarly. Built on a similar platform, the Land Cruiser is also a good off-roader, comes standard with plenty of features, and has a comfortable cabin. Its interior isn’t as high-end – and the slightly lower price tag reflects that.
9) 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser
Interior Score: 7.9/10 | Safety: TBD
The Land Cruiser comes standard with leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated second-row seats.
The front seats are supportive and visibility is excellent. The second row also provides plenty of space. As in the LX, the third row is cramped and best left to children.
10) 2018 Cadillac Escalade
Price With 7 Seats: $74,695 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.8/10
The Escalade is one of the most luxurious large SUVs on the market. It has great towing capacity, adequate interior space, and a peppy V8. It does suffer from below-average safety scores, which brings down its overall score.
10) 2018 Cadillac Escalade
Interior Score: 7.7/10 | Safety: 7.9/10
The Escalade seats seven passengers in the standard configuration. Leather seats that are heated (in every row but the third) come standard. The first and second row offer an exceptional amount of head- and legroom, but overall space is about average for the class. The third row is also lacking in space, particularly for an SUV its size.
Bonus: 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon
Price With 7 Seats: $63,050 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.7/10
The E-Class made the “bonus” list because it’s far from a traditional seven-seater vehicle. We rank the E-Class sedan among the luxury midsize cars – where it ranks quite well. However, Mercedes does offer it in a wagon variation, which seats up to seven. No matter the variation, the E-Class offers excellent driving dynamics and a refined, comfortable interior.
Bonus: 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon
Interior Score: 9.0/10 | Safety: 10.0/10
The E-Class Wagon seats seven passengers on synthetic leather. Power front seats are also standard. On the outside, the E-Class wagon appears like any other wagon. However, the interior houses three rows – and the third row is rear facing. The second row is spacious and comfortable. The third offers plenty of space, but its unorthodox layout may not be for everyone.
