These Cars Have Small Yet Satisfying Engines

In a bid to increase fuel efficiency, automakers are placing three- and four-cylinder engines in vehicles that just a decade ago would be powered by a six- or eight-cylinder power plant. Engineering teams have tuned the smaller engines so that, despite their size, they are able to deliver robust experiences behind the wheel.

The best four-cylinder engines offer a good balance of fuel efficiency and power. They’re adequate for all driving situations, from city streets to fast highways. All the cars on this list have engines that fit the bill, though many of them are not base model offerings. Most are available for $30,000 or less, but some luxury models on this list are around $40,000.

We are consistently updating our rankings using new information as it becomes available. Because of that, some of the scores listed in this slideshow may not match the scores you see when you click through to find out more information about a model. They were accurate at the time of publication.
