Ford Explorer

10) 2018 Ford Explorer

Price With Three Rows: $31,990 | U.S. News Score: 7.9/10

Value: The midsize Ford Explorer has one of the highest average transaction prices in the 3-row SUV segment, and its total cost of ownership is high, pecking at the toes of $50,000.

Much of its higher cost of ownership can be explained by its high average price. After all, an expensive car depreciates more, costs more in taxes, and costs more to insure. However, the Ford Explorer also has high repair costs for the class, which can’t be blamed on its high initial cost.

Quality: Though the Explorer is one of the longest-running names in the midsize SUV category, it is expensive for what it is, and sits in the shadow of newer, more comfortable, and more efficient competitors. On the upside, its third row comes standard.

The Explorer fares well in crash testing, and though the 2018 model does not yet have a reliability score from J.D. Power and Associates, the mechanically identical 2017 model earns three out of a possible five points, which indicates average reliability.
