2017 Subaru Legacy

MSRP and U.S. News Overall Score: $21,995 / 8.1 out of 10

While the 2017 Subaru Legacy ended up in 14th place in the U.S. News & World Report’s overall ranking of midsize cars, it does have one compelling feature that catapults it into first place in the minds of many buyers. It is the only popularly priced sedan with standard all-wheel drive.

Starting at $21,995, it is thousands of dollars cheaper than most alternatives. The Legacy is even more unique because, unlike many of those competitors that send power to the rear wheels only when the front wheels slip, the Legacy uses active torque vectoring to enhance handling in many situations.

The base, 175-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is refined, but not too powerful. Even the 256-horsepower six-cylinder motor can feel a little sluggish when first starting out, though its added power shows up for passing and merging. The upside with the 2.5-liter four is excellent fuel economy.
