2021 Audi TT Performance Review

Performance: 8.5

The 2021 Audi TT offers well-rounded performance. The TT feels punchy, and it accelerates up to speed quickly. The steering is responsive, and this Audi remains stable around turns. Its ride quality is firm but still comfortable enough for daily driving.

  • "The TT enjoys a smooth engine, superb grip, precise handling, a relatively quiet cabin and a ride quality that’s clearly sporty, but not jarring." -- Autotrader
  • "While it’s not as performance-oriented as some sports-car rivals such as the Toyota Supra or Porsche 718, the TT handles well and is reasonably fun to drive." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Audi TT's appeal is more than skin-deep, too. The 2.0-liter engine delivers a healthy punch of power and its sharp handling is enhanced with standard all-wheel drive. Thankfully, all of this athleticism doesn't come at the expense of comfort, as it's easy to live with from day to day." -- Edmunds (2017)

Engine Options, Horsepower, and Acceleration

  • Base engine: 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque (TT)
  • Available engines:
    • 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque (TTS)
    • 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder with 394 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque (TT RS)
  • Drivetrain: all-wheel drive
  • Transmission: seven-speed dual-clutch automatic

The Audi TT is available in three configurations: TT, TTS, and TT RS. Each of these models can hustle up to speed with authority, though the TT RS is easily the zestiest performer of the bunch. Its five-cylinder engine produces a throaty exhaust note and it can slingshot the car from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. The TT and TTS models can sprint from zero to 60 mph in a snappy 5.2 and 4.4 seconds, respectively. The dual-clutch transmission -- standard on all models -- earns praise for its quick yet smooth gear changes.

  • "The TTS is a sports car with enough power to have a lot of fun, but little more than that. There isn't a wave of horsepower left untapped -- everything the car has to offer can be fully exploited, and its great grip and decent handling give you the faith to push right up to the fringes of your comfort level." -- CNET (2019)
  • "The Audi TT is one of those cars that you look forward to driving every day. Power delivery is smooth and linear and the ride quality deftly balances performance and comfort." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The 2.0-liter sounds good, revs nicely and puts the power down smoothly. Turbo lag? Nah. Not that I could tell, anyway. Finally a dual clutch I like. It's delightful, whether playing with the paddles or not -- quick, well-timed up and downshifts." -- Autoweek (2016)

MPG Estimates

  • TT: 23/31 mpg city/highway
  • TTS: 23/29 mpg
  • TT RS: 20/30 mpg

Handling and Braking

The Audi TT feels stable and composed around turns, with minimal body lean. The steering is quick, the brakes offer strong stopping power, and the Quattro all-wheel-drive system provides confidence-inspiring grip. The suspension has enough compliance to soak up most bumps and dips, though the ride can be jittery at times.

  • "The new TTS is fitted with the latest generation of Audi's Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, which takes a lot of the guess work out of fast corners. With torque being shuffled quickly, front-to-back and side-to-side when needed, I could throw the TTS into bends quicker, and the forgiving nature of the handling meant that a less-than-perfect line though a sequence of bends went largely unpunished." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Short of putting the TT on a racetrack, its handling is near faultless. The AWD system does a beautiful job of keeping the car on the intended line. There's great traction and superb poise through turns." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Audi says the fixed-rate springs are somewhere between the normal and dynamic settings offered on the magnetic ride cars, which seems like a fair assessment after driving both. The ride will rarely jar you, but roll hasn't been quelled as much as you might expect." -- Autoweek (2017)
