2019 Audi TT Performance Review

The 2019 Audi TT is lively and potent, and the Quattro all-wheel-drive system keeps it composed on winding roads. The base model feels a bit underpowered by class standards, though the available engines have plenty of pep. On the plus side, fuel economy estimates with the base engine are fantastic for the segment.

Acceleration and Power

There are three turbocharged engines to choose from in this Audi, all of which are mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The base coupe and roadster have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower, while the TTS takes this engine and wrings out 288 horsepower. The performance-oriented Audi TT RS features a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that puts out 394 horsepower.

Acceleration in the base trim gets mixed reviews. It’s no slouch, but it wouldn’t win a short sprint against rivals. The TTS and TT RS feel more energetic, and the RS boasts a breakneck zero-to-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds.

Regardless of body style, Audi TT models with the base engine get EPA estimates of 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Those are decent estimates among luxury sports cars. The TTS coupe gets the same city estimates, but highway figures drop to 29 mpg. The EPA has not evaluated the TT RS as of this writing.

Handling and Braking

Standard Quattro all-wheel drive and a Drive Select system that allows the driver to adjust handling for greater comfort or sportiness help make this Audi fun to drive. Its excellent traction lets it tackle twists and turns with confidence. The higher-level TTS and TT RS trims add a magnetic ride system that near-instantaneously adjusts the suspension to varying road conditions.
