2015 Audi TT Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Audi TT was new.

Performance: 7.4

Auto writers appreciate the 2015 Audi TT’s all-wheel drive traction, and they think it has fairly agile handling and lively acceleration. Nevertheless, they note that most rivals are faster, more nimble and more fun to drive.

  • "On winding roads, the TT may not be a hardcore performance car, but it's pretty fun to drive anyway." -- Autotrader
  • "… if driving enjoyment is a priority for you, you'll find that the 2015 Audi TT has a lower fun factor than some rivals." -- Edmunds
  • "… the TT is no slouch, and its quattro all-wheel-drive system helps grip the road in a way competitors like the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK and Porsche Cayman can't match." -- Kelley Blue Book

Acceleration and Power

The 2015 Audi TT comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission is standard. According to the EPA, the 2015 TT gets 22/31 mpg city/highway, which is typical for a four-cylinder sports car.

The Audi TTS also has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but in this trim it makes 265 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The TTS is also equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Audi estimates that the TTS will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph.

Reviewers write that the base TT is peppy, though some rivals offer more power. The TTS is quicker than the base TT, which reviewers say makes it a better choice for automotive enthusiasts. Critics are very impressed with the dual-clutch transmission because they say it combines the convenience of an automatic with the fast-shifting fun of a manual.

  • "Though its exhaust note might not stir your soul, the 2015 Audi TT's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers respectable power and performance. The quick-shifting automated manual transmission helps make the most of that output. Still, 211 hp isn't much in this segment, where closer to 300 hp is more typical." -- Edmunds
  • "The TT's 2.0T engine delivers enthusiastic acceleration whenever you goose the throttle. The automated manual transmission is even more impressive, upshifting instantaneously and downshifting smoothly thanks to precise rev-matching. Of course, there are much faster cars available for similar coin, but no one would ever accuse the TT of being slow." -- Autotrader
  • "Who says you can't have the best of both worlds? This transmission acts just like any smooth-shifting automatic in congested city traffic. But on the track, it's a swift-shifting, pedal-free manual gearbox." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The TTS is where it's at for enthusiasts, though, as it's quicker and sportier than the base car." -- Car and Driver (2012)

Handling and Braking

According to test drivers, the all-wheel drive Audi TT has excellent traction and composed handling. However, most agree that it is less nimble through corners than some competitors, and its steering lacks the precision of the steering in rivals like the Porsche Boxster. Reviewers note that the base TT has a composed ride and the TTS’ adjustable magnetic suspension makes it even more comfortable.

  • "Grip from the Quattro all-wheel-drive system is tenacious, and the engine and transmission complement the chassis nicely. Predictably, the ride is firm, but it's never harsh, and the optional magnetic dampers make the TT even suppler." -- Autotrader
  • "… the TT's handling is stable and secure, but compared to more focused sports cars, it doesn't feel as sharp or entertaining on roads with tight turns." -- Edmunds
  • "While the TT may lack the precise steering response of the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z4, we think that all but the most hard-core of drivers will happy to trade a bit of steering precision for the way the TT holds in corners and its stable, smooth ride." -- Kelley Blue Book
