2020 Audi Q8 Interior

2020 Audi Q8 Interior Review

Interior: 7.3

The 2020 Audi Q8 has a lovely interior with high-end materials and tastefully modern styling. There’s generous seating space in both rows, and Audi’s infotainment features are largely user-friendly. Cargo space is decent for the segment.

  • "In typical fashion, Audi has crafted a sophisticated and sturdy environment inside the Q8. The materials are premium, and the panels are expertly aligned." -- Car and Driver
  • "Looking past all the shiny LCD screens, the rest of the Q8's interior is clean, with simple lines and high-quality materials. A chrome strip runs the length of the dash, and though it would seem to be interrupted by the HVAC vents, it cleverly stays straight no matter where the vent is pointed. Taken as a whole, the Q8's interior has a serious concept-car vibe, and it's way nicer inside than its competitors from BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Land Rover. If you're into high-tech interior furnishings, the Q8 offers them in spades." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "As is to be expected from a range-topping Audi … fit and finish throughout the cabin is impeccable. Soft leather seats and door panels and a dark Alcantara headliner are offset by dimpled, tactile aluminum brightwork on the dash, and its simple but effective esthetic works well given the sheer size of the beast." -- New York Daily News (2019)

The Audi Q8 is a luxury two-row SUV with five seats. The front seats are comfy, supportive, and quite spacious. Outward visibility is excellent as well. The rear seats are similarly comfortable and roomy, even for taller occupants. Leather upholstery and heated front seats are standard. Ventilated and massaging front seats are available. Other options include a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Q8’s rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the system its highest rating of Good for ease of use.

  • "Not only is the Q8 visually impressive, it has more than enough passenger space. The driving position remains sporty despite its elevated height, and two adults can leisurely stretch out in the back." -- Car and Driver
  • "There's great visibility from the driver's seat—even to the back, where the rear windshield drops dramatically to create the coupelike look Audi was aiming for. The cabin is remarkably quiet thanks to a double-layer windshield and acoustic windows, and all of the occupants will enjoy the Q8's spaciousness." -- Motor Trend (2019)
  • "Due to the five-seat, two-row configuration, Audi has managed to allow quite a bit of fore/aft movement for the second row. Leg room is more than adequate, and because the roofline doesn't swoop down too radically, our six-foot, two-inch test driver had no trouble with headroom, either." -- Autoblog (2019)

Interior Features

The Q8 comes standard with Audi’s newest version of its MMI dual-screen infotainment system, which pairs a 10.1-inch touch screen at the top of the dashboard with an 8.6-inch touch screen below it. Other standard features include navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, three USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, a 10-speaker stereo, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a configurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster (Audi Virtual Cockpit).

This dual-screen setup looks sleek, and it’s easy to use. The upper screen controls the navigation, radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The lower screen is for adjusting the climate controls and vehicle settings. Both screens provide haptic feedback, or a subtle vibration felt at the fingertips, so you can tell if the system detected your input. However, some critics say too much input force is required.

Available features include wireless device charging, quad-zone automatic climate control, and 17- and 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound systems.

The Q8 has a wide array of standard and available safety features. All models are equipped with a rearview camera, parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with brake assist.

Available safety features include a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a surround-view parking camera system, and a night vision camera.

  • "Instead of the intuitive rotary controller found on other Audi models, the displays respond to touch inputs with haptic feedback. We quickly assimilated to its logical menus and large icons, but distractions were unavoidable. Thankfully, receptive voice commands and handy steering-wheel controls provide alternate operation.” -- Car and Driver
  • "I discovered Audi's implementation of touch technology (which focuses on haptic feedback) requires more than just a casual brush with your fingers to activate a given function. A genuine push-until-it-pushes-back interaction is required when making adjustments on the lower screen (with the top exhibiting more traditional touchscreen behavior). This led to many 'missed' commands until I figured out how much pressure was enough." -- New York Daily News (2019)
  • "While I understand why car designers do so, experience has taught me to be suspect of automakers who remove physical switchgear in favor of touchscreen-based infotainment systems, especially multi-screen solutions. Generally speaking, they're more trouble than they're worth, being convoluted of layout, and most importantly, frustrating to use in a moving vehicle. That said, I didn't have prior experience with MMI Touch Response, yet I found it to be about as well-engineered a touchscreen system as I've found." -- CNET (2019)

The Audi Q8 has 30.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 60.7 cubic feet with these seats folded. That’s a bit smaller than most luxury midsize SUVs, but it’s still plenty of room for large and bulky items. A power liftgate is standard.

  • "Although the two-row Q8 has less cargo volume than the three-row Q7, we managed to squeeze eight carry-on bags behind its back seat. That number increased to 23 (two less than in the Q7) with the split-folding rear bench folded nearly flat. Our test vehicle had the optional air suspension, which can lower the rear end to help with lifting luggage in and out." -- Car and Driver
  • "Cargo space is likewise solid." -- CNET (2019)
  • "If golf is your thing, the rear compartment is big enough to stow two golf bags sideways. An electrical luggage compartment cover is available as an option, which uses a rail-based system to automatically retract when the tailgate is opened and fall back into place when shut." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
