2019 Audi Q7 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 9.1

The 2019 Audi Q7 has sporty handling and energetic engine choices. Fuel economy is also good for the class.

  • "The Q7 may be Audi's biggest SUV, but it's surprisingly nimble for its size, especially when equipped with the optional adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering. Combine that with good visibility and willing engines and the Q7 is a pleasure to drive." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The Q7 boasts decent straight-line performance, and it shines on serious curves, no doubt to the dismay of any kids in back." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • "Overall, it's just a breeze to drive, and I felt relaxed every time I was behind the wheel. Sure, the massaging seats helped that a bit, but the reality is that the Q7 inspires confidence no matter what the driving conditions." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The 2019 Q7 comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that produces 329 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque is optional. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. With either engine, the Q7 gets 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

The base engine supplies decent power and acceleration, but the optional V6 is much more potent. The refined transmission delivers smooth and precise shifts.

  • The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is a commendable powerhouse. The new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine packs decent motivation for its size but lacks the deeper reserves of the V6 for high-speed passing and towing." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We like both engines, but keep in mind that the four-cylinder's advantage is a lower price tag more so than improved fuel economy. … Smooth and quiet supercharged V6 delivers plentiful power with more than enough punch for easy passing and merging. … Shifts from the eight-speed transmission are seamless, and it always seems to be in the right gear at the right time. One of the best in the class." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "With a long-travel throttle and gentle tip-in, it's easy to pull away smoothly with the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. As we've learned from experiencing it in other Audi models, the TFSI engine is a powerhouse with a wide power band that pulls non-stop from idle to redline. In this application, it's also nearly silent unless you're really standing on the throttle. The V-6 pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that is totally unremarkable, a huge compliment given how often we gripe about constantly shifting multispeed transmissions." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)

Handling and Braking

The Audi Q7 comes standard with all-wheel drive. It has engaging handling, well-weighted steering, and a comfortable and relaxing ride over most surfaces.

  • "The first-gen Audi Q7 was already among the most fun-to-drive 3-row SUVs available, and its dynamics and driving enjoyment have only gotten better with this new, 2nd-gen model. That's what happens when you lose roughly 500 pounds, lower your center of gravity by 1.7 inches and install a 5-link front/rear suspension. On the road, this translates to an SUV that's supple and quiet in everyday driving, and dynamically polished when the need for speed or a curvy road beckons." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Although they're optional, the adaptive air suspension and rear wheel steering features really do make a difference, providing superb comfort and body control, with an uncanny agility for such a large vehicle." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "Steering effort is appropriate at all speeds, from feather-light in parking lots to firm on the highway." -- Edmunds (2018)
