2020 Audi Q7 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.2

The 2020 Audi Q7 has a lavish cabin with comfortable seats, elegant styling, and a rich assortment of tech features. The crown jewel is the new state-of-the-art infotainment system. However, some of its functions are buried deep in its menu layout.

  • "With its minimalist, contemporary design matched with loads of technology and excellent comfort and build quality, the Q7's cabin is a special place. Beautiful materials and design highlight the Q7's interior, as do the intelligent layout of its controls and the comfortable seats that feature both ample support and adjustability." -- Car and Driver
  • "Audi has a knack for crafting some of the finest yet most useful cabins, and the Q7 is no exception. The interior of Audi's flagship SUV is highlighted by standard leather upholstery and a recast dash with an A8-style double-inlay design." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The … Q7's modern and luxurious interior is a great place to spend time. It's attractive without being gimmicky, and everything is thoughtfully designed, placed and executed. The only real downside is its relatively small cargo space." -- Edmunds (2018)

Seating

The base Q7 seats up to seven people on standard leather upholstery. Heated, eight-way power-adjustable front seats and power-folding third-row seats are also standard. The front seats are available with 12- or 18-way power adjustability, as well as ventilation and massage functions. You can also get heated rear seats, Valcona leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and power rear-door sunshades.

Adults have more than enough room to stretch out in the first two rows. However, the third row is cramped, even by luxury three-row SUV standards, and the second row’s outboard seats don’t hold you in place very well.

For installing child safety seats, the Q7 has a complete set of LATCH connectors in each of its rear seats. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this setup the highest rating of Good+ for ease of use. The "+" indicates that the system is among the easiest to use.

  • "First- and second-row seats provide ample space for adults, but you’ll need to be petite to be comfortable for any lengthy drive in the way back. The Q7 is among the least roomy three-row luxury crossovers – BMW’s X7 and Mercedes-Benz’s GLS outsize it significantly in both third-row space and total cargo volume, as do the Volvo XC90 and Lincoln Aviator." -- Autoblog
  • "Regardless of whether or not you pay extra for more leather, the Q7's cabin is quiet and comfortable, and it has that high-quality/high-tech feel that's typical of Audi products. There's plenty of occupant space in the first two rows, but the power-folding third row is still a little cramped for adults of average size or above." -- Autotrader
  • "The front seats have enough bolstering to hold occupants comfortably in place, but not so much to be aggressive. The second row is less promising: Outboard seats have minimal bolstering, so you slide around quite a bit. The middle seat, though wider than many, is still not the most comfortable spot to sit in." -- Cars.com

Interior Features

The Q7 comes with plenty of technology, including the MMI infotainment system. It features  10.1-inch upper an 8.6-inch lower touch screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, Audi's Virtual Cockpit (a 12.3-inch display located behind the steering wheel), a 10-speaker stereo, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, and USB ports. Push-button start, proximity keyless entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof also come standard.

Available features include wireless device charging, a 19-speaker 3D stereo, a 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, and quad-zone automatic climate control.

The MMI infotainment system has a cutting-edge look and feel, but it’s a mixed bag overall. On one hand, the screens’ haptic feedback works responsively and lets you know quickly that your selections registered. On the other hand, several settings are buried deeply in submenus, and it can take time to find them.

Standard safety features include Audi Pre Sense Basic, which rolls up the windows and tightens the seat belts when a collision is imminent, and Audi Pre Sense Front, which includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. All Q7 models also come with a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning.

Available driver aids include lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, intersection assist, traffic sign recognition, vehicle exit warning, a night-vision camera, and a surround-view parking camera system. You can also upgrade to get Audi Pre Sense Side, which senses side-impact collisions, and Audi Pre Sense Rear, which is Audi's term for blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

  • "The updated Q7 now features a very screen-heavy cockpit. We prefer the new fixed infotainment screen to the pop-up screen found in the old model." -- Autotrader
  • "Though the screens – 10.1-inches top and 8.6 inches below – allow a virtually button-free center stack, they come with at least one undeniable downside. They relegate some critical tasks into the system’s submenus, which is both time consuming and annoying. Still, the screens look modern, and their response time, which is acknowledged by both haptic and audio feedback, is quick. And when they’re off, they disappear into an otherwise black dashboard, creating a look that’s more integrated and better finished than the Q7’s German competitors." -- Autoblog
  • "The dashboard has been completely reworked, giving the Q7 what amounts to the Q8 interior. That means physical climate controls are gone, replaced by a lower, 8.6-inch touchscreen that houses controls for the climate and seat temperature among other functions. As a showpiece, the new dashboard and multimedia system look great: The screens are sharp and the whole of it gleams. With a standard 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument panel, too, the Q7 has a futuristic look and feel." -- Cars.com

Cargo

The 2020 Q7's numbers are slightly below average for a luxury midsize SUV. It has 30.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row and a maximum cargo capacity of 72.4 cubic feet with rear rows folded.

A power-folding third row and a hands-free power liftgate come standard.

  • "As with most three-row SUVs, there isn't a ton of cargo space in the Audi's cargo area when all of its seats are in use. But it has available space comparable with its key rivals, and the rearmost row can be quickly raised or lowered via power controls, which makes up for the somewhat clumsy operation of the middle row. With all seats stowed, the 2019 Q7 had room for 25 of our carry-on suitcases, a result we expect the updated 2020 model to match." -- Car and Driver
  • "Cargo capacity ... below the class average, but at least it's nearly all usable. The power-folding third-row seats, hands-free liftgate and low floor height make for easy loading." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Where the Q7 falters a bit is in the utility department. Yes, this is a full-size luxury SUV, and as such it can haul more stuff than the majority of vehicles on the road, but for something so large, cargo space leaves something to be desired." -- New York Daily News (2017)
