2018 Audi Q7 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 9.1

When it comes to performance, the 2018 Audi Q7 ranks as one of the best luxury midsize SUVs on the market. It's more nimble and energetic than most, but the ride is still smooth and composed.

  • "The Q7 may be Audi's biggest SUV, but it's surprisingly nimble for its size, especially when equipped with the optional adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering. Combine that with good visibility and willing engines and the Q7 is a pleasure to drive. And if you're not in the mood to drive, the Q7's optional driver aids will not only keep you in your lane, but it will also anticipate turns and adjust to local speed limits." -- Edmunds
  • "Opting for a crossover utility vehicle with a third row of seats usually means dialing back the driving enjoyment. That isn't the case with the new 2017 Audi Q7, however, thanks to significant weight savings over its predecessor and a heaping portion of advanced technology." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "The new Q7 is more fun to drive than many of its competitors, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Acura MDX." -- Autoweek (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The base engine in the 2018 Q7 is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. This turbocharged engine has a 252-horsepower rating and tackles most day-to-day driving scenarios with a reasonable amount of verve. The 3.0-liter V6 engine is much more enthusiastic, and it’s the better pick if you want more robust acceleration or need a higher towing capacity. Both engines come with a refined eight-speed automatic transmission and have above-average fuel economy. They have an identical EPA rating of 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

  • "The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is a commendable powerhouse. The new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine packs decent motivation for its size but lacks the deeper reserves of the V6 for high-speed passing and towing." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We like both engines, but keep in mind that the four-cylinder's advantage is a lower price tag more so than improved fuel economy." -- Edmunds
  • "As we've learned from experiencing it in other Audi models, the TFSI engine is a powerhouse with a wide power band that pulls non-stop from idle to redline. In this application, it's also nearly silent unless you're really standing on the throttle." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)

Handling and Braking

Audi includes its Quattro all-wheel-drive system in every Q7. Also standard is the highly praised Drive Select, which has four distinct settings: comfort, dynamic, auto, and off road. Performance upgrades include adaptive air suspension and all-wheel steering. The Q7 is agile and composed, especially for a vehicle this size. Its steering feels just right, the brakes are solid, and there's very little body lean.

  • "For a big three-row SUV, the Q7 is surprisingly agile. Comfort mode trades away some sharpness in the name of comfort, while Dynamic mode generates quick reflexes and tighter roll control that makes the Q7 more willing and able on winding roads." -- Edmunds
  • "The first-gen Audi Q7 was already among the most fun-to-drive 3-row SUVs available, and its dynamics and driving enjoyment have only gotten better with this new, 2nd-gen model. That's what happens when you lose roughly 500 pounds, lower your center of gravity by 1.7 inches and install a 5-link front/rear suspension. On the road, this translates to an SUV that's supple and quiet in everyday driving, and dynamically polished when the need for speed or a curvy road beckons." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "With well-weighted steering, a reassuringly firm brake pedal, and well-damped body motions, no road is a chore in the Audi." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
